T. Rowe Price defends Dogecoin inclusion in active crypto ETF

The T. Rowe Price Active Crypto ETF (TKNZ), launched in July 2026 by Baltimore-based T. Rowe Price, is a new crypto investment option. Rowe Price, overseeing approximately $1.9 trillion in assets, has ignited discussion in the crypto investment world. The firm launched its T. Rowe Price Active Crypto ETF (TKNZ) in July 2026 on NYSE Arca, making waves by including memecoins such as Dogecoin in its initial portfolio.

Blue Macellari, the head of digital assets and lead portfolio manager for TKNZ, stated this unconventional choice is part of a deliberate active management strategy, not merely chasing speculative trends. This move sets T. Rowe Price apart from many traditional financial institutions often hesitant to embrace such volatile assets.

Active strategy drives memecoin exposure

T. Rowe Price’s decision to include Dogecoin in the TKNZ fund stems from a commitment to true active management. Blue Macellari articulated that an “intellectual snob” approach to certain cryptocurrencies would ultimately limit investor participation in potential market gains. This philosophy underlines the fund’s design to capitalize on emerging trends and momentum-driven rallies.

The TKNZ ETF offers managers the discretion to adjust holdings across a diverse basket of cryptocurrencies. This differs significantly from passive funds that simply track market-cap-weighted indexes. The firm believes such a hands-on approach is particularly vital in the rapidly evolving crypto asset class, where market leadership can shift quickly.

Initial TKNZ portfolio allocations

At its launch, the TKNZ fund began trading with approximately $15 million in assets under management. The initial portfolio allocation reflected a balanced approach, with a significant majority in established cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin represented about 40.75% to 41% of the fund, while Ethereum accounted for approximately 18% to 18.42%.

The fund also included a substantial 11% allocation to BNB. Dogecoin, the only memecoin listed in the initial rotation, constituted 1.26% of the fund. Other holdings at launch included Solana (SOL), XRP, Stellar (XLM), and the USDC stablecoin, offering a broad exposure to the digital asset market.

Memecoins as blockchain stress tests

Beyond investment merits, Blue Macellari highlighted another critical rationale for memecoin inclusion: their utility as a “stress test” for underlying blockchain networks. She argued that intense trading activity around memecoins provides invaluable insights into a network’s performance under pressure.

This kind of high-volume engagement demands near-instant settlement and low transaction costs. For a blockchain to support a memecoin season, it must remain reliable even during periods of heavy congestion. This rigorous testing environment has implications far beyond speculative trading.

As stablecoins become more integrated into mainstream finance, networks must prove capable of handling both multi-million-dollar transfers and everyday consumer transactions efficiently. It underscores the practical importance of robust network infrastructure.

Evolving crypto ETF market landscape

The T. Rowe Price Active Crypto ETF represents a significant development in the broader crypto exchange-traded fund market. Macellari envisions a future where crypto ETFs move beyond simple Bitcoin or Ethereum tracking. Instead, she anticipates a market with actively managed, sector-specific, and multi-token funds.

The TKNZ product was designed as a “grow-with-me” offering, allowing it to adapt as the regulatory framework matures. The fund currently invests in five to 15 cryptocurrencies, but its eligible universe could expand as additional assets meet the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) generic listing standards. Ongoing discussions about the federal regulatory landscape impact the broader industry.

Regulatory catalysts for multi-token ETFs

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) played a pivotal role in enabling the launch of TKNZ. The agency finalized generic listing standards in 2025, which were essential for creating multi-token ETFs capable of expanding their investable universe over time. These new standards provided the necessary tools for active managers like T. Rowe Price to offer such diverse products.

The SEC approved the listing for TKNZ between June 12 and June 15, 2026. This regulatory clarity opened doors for more complex and actively managed crypto investment vehicles. Many market participants see this as a key step towards broader institutional adoption and diversification within the digital asset space. T.

Rowe Price filed for the ETF in October 2025, following the launch of a crypto index to test the waters.

T. Rowe Price’s distinct investment approach

T. Rowe Price is not positioning itself to compete directly with firms like BlackRock, which often focus on passive crypto investing. Their strategic lane remains firmly in active portfolio management. Blue Macellari emphasized that good judgment and decision-making are paramount in the volatile crypto sector. The firm believes active management can add significant value for clients where market dynamics shift rapidly.

The investment team evaluates potential assets using three layers of analysis. This includes blockchain technology and token economics, ecosystem growth and adoption, and critical market momentum. They aren’t just looking at fundamentals; they’re also gauging community sentiment.

As Macellari put it, you ignore the sentiment of “crypto Twitter” at your own peril, even if your fundamentals are sound. This nuanced approach allows T. Rowe Price to navigate the complexities of the digital asset market more effectively. It’s a recognition that crypto markets are influenced by both technical innovation and social dynamics.

This is particularly true for assets like memecoins, which often gain traction through community-driven enthusiasm. The firm’s portfolio includes established assets such as Ethereum (ETH), reflecting diversified institutional crypto strategies.

Ultimately, the inclusion of memecoins in a $1.9 trillion asset manager’s product underscores a significant shift in institutional perception. It highlights a growing willingness to engage with the full spectrum of the crypto market, driven by a belief that active management can effectively harness its unique opportunities. The rise of specialized funds signals a maturing investment landscape, showcasing BNB Chain
