Evernorth targets XRP Ledger native lending to drive institutional yield

Evernorth Chief Business Officer Sagar Shah has announced plans to deploy the firm’s XRP holdings into decentralized finance through upcoming XRP Ledger native lending functionality. The digital asset treasury firm intends to utilize this proposed protocol to transform its token reserves from a passive balance sheet entry into an active, yield-generating portfolio.

Shah confirmed the strategic move during the Wyoming Blockchain Symposium 2026, where he spoke to The Block’s Kelvin Sparks. Evernorth was built as an XRP-focused digital asset treasury with the explicit purpose of putting its holdings to work rather than maintaining static reserves. The company is also in the process of going public.

Evernorth targets XRP Ledger native lending opportunities

Institutional treasury management in the cryptocurrency sector is fundamentally shifting toward active capital deployment. Evernorth views the implementation of native network lending as a key catalyst to execute this strategy safely.

Network validators are actively reviewing the code for the XLS-66 upgrade to ensure its technical robustness. This specific proposal introduces borrowing and lending capabilities directly at the base layer of the blockchain, completely bypassing the need for third-party application layers.

Institutional appetite for digital yields is accelerating across the sector. Treasury operators must carefully manage exposure to potential DeFi risk before deploying material capital. Evernorth aims to satisfy these strict institutional mandates by relying on core network architecture rather than external applications.

Examining the XLS-66 proposal for digital asset security

The proposed XLS-66 protocol represents a structural divergence from how other major networks handle financial applications. By embedding the logic natively into the ledger, developers eliminate the middleman of custom-coded smart contracts. It is an approach that limits experimental flexibility but substantially hardens the attack surface.

Shah emphasized that embedding these financial primitives directly into the network architecture provides distinct security guarantees. He argued that the smart contract vulnerabilities that often plague alternative blockchains are functionally neutralized on a purpose-built ledger.

This architectural philosophy caters directly to institutional risk models. A native lending protocol requires validators to approve the core operational logic during network upgrades. Once implemented, the rules of capital deployment remain uniform and predictable for corporate treasuries.

Mitigating smart contract exploits in DeFi opportunities

Smart contract exploits remain a primary deterrent for traditional financial institutions entering decentralized markets. Custom code deployed by anonymous developers carries inherent auditing challenges and frequent execution flaws. Evernorth views the ledger-native design as a definitive solution to this persistent industry bottleneck.

Corporate treasury managers seeking yield face significant hurdles on highly experimental platforms. While some firms might look to alternative assets or wait for a Bitcoin treasury buyback to lower yield pressure, others want direct on-chain utility. Removing bespoke contracts from the lending process isolates capital from external routing failures.

Shah, who previously spent five years at Ripple, understands the specific risk tolerance of enterprise network participants. He notes that the inherent protections built into the native environment make exploits exceedingly rare. This creates a viable foundation for public companies to generate yield confidently.

Scaling tokenized real-world assets through native infrastructure

The implementation of basic financial primitives supports a much broader institutional objective. Shah highlighted confidential transfers and smart escrows as essential upcoming functions for the network. These features specifically target the rapidly expanding tokenized asset sector.

Current market data shows roughly $30 billion in assets are already tokenized across the digital economy. Industry executives widely expect this category to scale into the trillions over the next decade. Secure lending protocols provide the necessary liquidity plumbing to service these future volumes.

Capital allocation requires deep liquidity to prevent volatile pricing disruptions. As heavy network inflows continue driving liquidity across major blockchains, treasury managers need scalable environments to absorb institutional volume. The combination of native lending and tokenized assets creates this exact market depth.

Regulatory implications for public digital asset firms

But operating a digital asset treasury under public market scrutiny limits the amount of technical risk a firm can legally assume. Evernorth’s transition toward a public listing demands strict adherence to institutional compliance standards. This reality makes experimental decentralized platforms entirely unviable for their capital.

The regulatory environment heavily scrutinizes how corporate entities manage digital asset yields. By utilizing a consensus-approved baseline protocol, treasury managers can point to standardized, network-wide security parameters during compliance audits. This simplifies the reporting burden for public accounting firms.

Public companies simply cannot afford to write off millions to smart contract drainers or flash loan manipulation. The predictability of a native protocol aligns perfectly with the fiduciary duties expected by equity shareholders. It establishes a verifiable chain of custody for every deployed asset.

Contrasting native environments with modular blockchain designs

The broader cryptocurrency industry remains divided on the optimal architecture for financial applications. Modular ecosystems encourage permissionless innovation through complex, interconnected applications. However, this composability introduces severe cascading risks when a single dependency fails.

Native ledger implementation sacrifices this rapid experimental freedom in favor of absolute structural rigidity. Developers cannot just deploy unvetted lending markets overnight. Every network change requires formal governance, ensuring only heavily audited logic reaches the production environment.

Institutional capital universally prefers this rigid predictability over volatile experimental frameworks. Evernorth’s decision to wait for the official network upgrade, rather than bridging assets to riskier chains, highlights this fundamental shift in corporate crypto strategies. Security now aggressively dictates deployment timelines.

Preparing the market for institutional lending liquidity

The introduction of formal yield mechanisms could fundamentally alter the economic velocity of the XRP token. Historically, major holders maintained passive wallets due to a lack of secure deployment avenues. Native lending activates this dormant supply, generating deep liquidity pools for institutional borrowers.

Borrowers utilizing the upgraded network will benefit from predictable algorithmic interest rates encoded directly into the core protocol. This transparency allows trading desks and treasury operators to forecast borrowing costs with high precision. Precise cost modeling is essential for executing complex arbitrage and hedging strategies.

As validators continue their technical review, the market is already pricing in the structural benefits of the upgrade. Evernorth stands prepared to immediately leverage these new liquidity channels. The firm represents the first of what may become a major wave of active institutional deployments.
