Tokenized Silver Gets a Yield Boost as Theo Brings $40 Million in Leases Onchain

Silver is getting a new life onchain. Theo, a New York-based platform focused on blockchain finance, has launched tokenized silver product thSLVR, backed by more than $40 million in active silver leases.

The idea is straightforward but unusual. Instead of simply tracking the price of silver, thSLVR is designed to let holders keep exposure to the metal while also receiving income generated by lending it to institutional borrowers.

That turns silver into something more than a static commodity holding.

Refiners, mints and industrial manufacturers regularly borrow physical silver to support production without taking on the metal’s price risk. In return, they pay a lease fee before eventually returning an equivalent amount of silver.

Historically, much of that lending income has gone to bullion banks and dealers rather than investors accessing silver through exchange-traded funds or similar products.

Theo is now putting that lending activity onchain.

Tokenized silver is betting on the lease rate

The timing is notable. Silver has been unusually volatile this year, climbing to a record $121.79 per ounce in January before losing 41% in just three days.

The metal later fell to $54.74 in July and has struggled to maintain a sustained rebound, recently trading around the mid-$60s. The moves have been linked to changing expectations for interest rates, speculative activity and uncertainty around industrial demand.

Theo’s bet is that the more interesting number may not always be the spot price.

Under the structure of thSLVR, the silver backing the token is leased to established institutional counterparties under standard market terms. Theo said the associated credit exposure is supported by a parent-company guarantee.

Token holders therefore retain exposure to silver’s price while also receiving the income generated through those leases.

The product is launching in beta for institutions and whitelisted investors, with broader availability planned for a later stage.

The market for tokenized silver remains tiny compared with tokenized gold, which has already grown into a multibillion-dollar category across several products.

Some existing silver tokens offer returns, but those typically come from a share of platform trading fees rather than directly from lending the underlying metal.

Theo is positioning thSLVR differently by tying the yield to the economics of physical silver financing itself.

That becomes particularly interesting when physical supply tightens.

According to data cited by Theo, about 83% of silver stored in London vaults is held inside physically backed investment products. That leaves roughly 136 million ounces available for trading and leasing.

And lease rates can move dramatically when that pool gets tight.

London’s one-month silver lease rate briefly reached around 39% in October 2025, compared with a historical norm below 1%. Rates have since returned closer to normal levels, but Theo points to another pressure point: the silver market is projected to post its sixth consecutive annual supply deficit in 2026, with the shortfall estimated at 46.3 million ounces.

“Silver is heading into a sixth straight year of supply deficit and the lendable pool in London is near a record low,” said Iggy Ioppe, chief investment officer of Theo, in emailed comments.

“In that setup the lease rate is the real signal, not the spot price, and it has been swinging hard. thSLVR brings the economics of silver lending onchain, and when the market gets tight, the value of that income becomes especially clear,” he added.

Tokenized silver is part of a broader commodity push

The launch also fits into a much larger expansion of tokenized real-world assets. What began with categories such as U.S. Treasuries and private credit has broadened into equities, funds and commodities.

RWA.xyz estimates that tokenized commodities now represent about $4.9 billion in distributed value across 130 products. Gold-backed tokens from Tether and Paxos account for much of that market, while the number of commodity-token holders increased 13% over the past month to almost 339,000.

For Theo, silver also connects to a wider strategy. The company, founded by former Optiver and IMC traders, already offers yield-bearing tokenized gold and U.S. Treasury products.

The silver leases will also expand the assets backing thUSD, Theo’s yield-bearing stablecoin. The product uses a hedged metals-lending strategy intended to generate returns without depending on whether commodity prices rise or fall.

With thSLVR, Theo is essentially turning one of the oldest forms of commodity finance into something that can live onchain: not just owning silver, but lending it too.
