Telegram to embed native Gram wallet for a billion users this summer

Telegram founder Pavel Durov announced today that the messaging giant will integrate a native, non-custodial Gram Wallet directly into every Telegram application this summer. This ambitious move aims to extend self-custody and instant, zero-fee crypto transactions to over a billion users globally.

Durov characterized the rollout as “the largest deployment of a non-custodial crypto wallet in human history,” promising unprecedented access to on-chain payments. The initiative leverages The Open Network (TON) blockchain and the recently rebranded Gram token, formerly known as Toncoin, which saw its name change on June 15, 2026, after 81.22% community approval.

unprecedented scale for crypto integration

The sheer scale of this impending integration is what sets it apart from previous attempts at mainstream crypto adoption. With Telegram crossing 1 billion monthly active users (MAU) in March 2025, the potential reach of the native Gram Wallet is immense.

It represents an order of magnitude leap beyond existing crypto integrations within social platforms. Currently, about 15% of Telegram’s user base, roughly 150 million accounts as of April 2026, already uses some form of wallet functionality.

But embedding a non-custodial solution means Telegram itself won’t hold users’ private keys. This gives individuals direct control over their digital assets, a core tenet of decentralized finance. The challenge now lies in activating this massive user base to actually use the wallet, rather than simply having it distributed.

telegram’s journey with the open network blockchain

Telegram’s path to this point has been long and fraught with regulatory challenges. Originally, Telegram planned to launch its own blockchain, the Telegram Open Network (TON), and its native token, Gram. However, a 2019 lawsuit from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) halted these plans, with the SEC arguing that Gram tokens constituted unregistered securities.

After a court ruling in March 2020 favored the SEC, Pavel Durov announced Telegram’s withdrawal from the project in May 2020. They later settled with the SEC, paying an $18.5 million civil penalty and agreeing to return $1.22 billion to investors. Despite Telegram’s official exit, a community of developers continued building The Open Network, which ultimately launched as a public, decentralized Layer-1 blockchain.

Telegram officially re-engaged with TON development in May 2026, becoming the network’s largest validator. It staked approximately 2.2 million GRAM, solidifying its commitment. This renewed involvement came after TON had served as Telegram’s exclusive infrastructure since January 2025.

The rebranding of Toncoin back to Gram in June 2026 was a symbolic and practical step. It reconnects the token with its original vision, making the ecosystem feel more cohesive. The timing coincides with Telegram’s absorption of transaction costs, offering “zero-fee” transactions.

the promise of zero-fee crypto transactions

A key attraction of the new native Gram Wallet will be the promise of instant, zero-fee cryptocurrency transactions. Telegram has evidently decided to absorb or subsidize these network costs, a move designed to eliminate a major barrier to entry for many potential crypto users.

This commitment follows a significant reduction in network fees earlier this year. On May 1, 2026, base transaction costs on TON were cut by roughly sixfold, dropping to about 0.00039 GRAM, or approximately US$0.0005.

This fee reduction dramatically lowered the economic hurdle for microtransactions and frequent use. The network’s fee earnings reflected this change, with TON’s revenue stepping down sharply in early 2026 to roughly US$1.3 million annualized, from US$35.3 million in 2024. This suggests a strategic decision to prioritize user acquisition and network usage over immediate fee-based revenue.

The Gram token itself has responded positively to recent developments. As of July 21, 2026, Gram traded near $1.53, registering an increase of 7.47% over 24 hours. Its circulating market cap stands at $4.17 billion, placing it 25th by this measure.

adoption challenges and market outlook

While distribution to a billion users is a powerful start, actual adoption and sustained usage remain the ultimate metrics. The success of the Telegram Gram Wallet hinges on users actively activating and utilizing the non-custodial features. Past initiatives, like the non-custodial TON Wallet rollout to 87 million US users in July 2025, showed a willingness to experiment with crypto integration in mainstream messaging apps.

However, that was a separate add-on, not a native core feature. The challenge for Telegram is to simplify the user experience for private key management, a concept still daunting for many mainstream users.

Telegram’s move could significantly accelerate mainstream cryptocurrency adoption by bringing self-custody and digital asset management to a vast, non-crypto-native audience. But it also places a large spotlight on the platform’s ability to educate users and ensure the security and usability of a non-custodial solution at this unprecedented scale. The coming months will reveal if Telegram can convert sheer distribution into widespread, active crypto engagement.
