Billy Markus calls Dogecoin merge mining removal

Billy Markus, the co-founder of Dogecoin, has forcefully rejected recent suggestions to end the cryptocurrency’s merge mining arrangement with Litecoin. His comments, made on X between July 18 and July 20, 2026, labeled the idea of removing Dogecoin merge mining as “pointless” and “dumb,” injecting a strong opinion into an ongoing community debate.

This intervention came after Dogecoin Foundation developer Paulo Vidal initiated a discussion questioning the long-term viability and security implications of Dogecoin’s current Auxiliary Proof of Work (AuxPoW) model. Markus’s direct rebuttal underscores the deep divisions within the Dogecoin community regarding its fundamental infrastructure.

Markus dismisses merge mining concerns

Markus, known online as “Shibetoshi Nakamoto,” dismissed the concerns raised by Vidal and others. He argued that any proposal should address “actual necessary problems” rather than “random made up ones for self-serving reasons.” His stance indicates a belief that the existing merge mining framework is not a problem requiring a solution.

He publicly stated on X that “removing merge mining is pointless, so it shouldn’t be done,” and in an earlier exchange, he maintained the move would be “dumb and pointless.” These strong words reflect a clear opposition to altering a system that has been foundational to Dogecoin for over a decade.

The roots of Dogecoin’s security model

Dogecoin adopted merge mining with Litecoin in August 2014, a critical decision made to bolster its network security. At the time, Dogecoin’s smaller hash rate left it vulnerable to 51% attacks, where a malicious entity could control enough of the network’s processing power to manipulate transactions.

AuxPoW, or merge mining, allows miners to simultaneously mine both Dogecoin and Litecoin using the same computational resources and proof-of-work algorithm. This effectively allows Dogecoin to leverage Litecoin’s significantly larger hash power, enhancing its security without requiring its own separate, robust mining infrastructure.

The system has been in place for 12 years now, becoming an integral part of how Dogecoin maintains its operational integrity. As of November 30, 2025, over 70% of Dogecoin’s hash power originates from this merged mining process, illustrating its deep integration and importance to the network.

Developer debate over Litecoin dependency

Paulo Vidal, a developer with the Dogecoin Foundation, sparked the recent debate by publicly questioning the ramifications of Dogecoin’s reliance on Litecoin. Vidal raised concerns about what might happen to Dogecoin’s security if Litecoin’s operations were to cease or diminish significantly.

The discussion extended to miner incentives and whether AuxPoW remains the most appropriate long-term solution for Dogecoin’s evolving ecosystem. Other notable figures, including David Schwartz (Director of Projects and Strategic Partnerships at the Litecoin Foundation) and developer Chromatic X, also weighed in on the technical and economic aspects of the arrangement.

Markus responded to Vidal’s inquiries by urging critics to “read Satoshi’s white paper,” suggesting a foundational understanding of Proof of Work principles should guide the discussion. He further emphasized that “miners mine for reward,” implying that as long as economic incentives exist, the system functions as intended.

Co-founder’s enduring influence

Despite stepping away from active Dogecoin development in 2014, Billy Markus retains considerable influence within the community. His “Shibetoshi Nakamoto” persona on X serves as a prominent voice, often guiding or correcting narratives around the meme coin.

His past sale of all his crypto holdings, including 50 Bitcoin, 440 Litecoin, and 6 million Dogecoin, means he has no direct financial investment in Scrypt altcoins, providing a seemingly detached perspective.

However, his pronouncements still carry significant weight, shaping public opinion and potentially influencing future technical decisions. His current role as an advisor to the Dogecoin Foundation further cements his position as an important, albeit non-developer, stakeholder.

This dynamic highlights a unique aspect of decentralized projects: the enduring moral authority of founders, even years after their direct involvement ends. It suggests that community sentiment, especially when articulated by an original visionary, can significantly impact a project’s direction, regardless of active technical contribution.

The path forward for Dogecoin’s infrastructure

The public clash over merge mining spotlights fundamental questions about how mature cryptocurrencies should manage their foundational security. For Dogecoin, the debate isn’t merely technical; it touches on its identity, its relationship with other chains like Litecoin, and its long-term resilience.

While the Dogecoin Core Development team has been maintaining and developing the protocol since 2014, the discussion initiated by Paulo Vidal and the forceful response from Billy Markus will undoubtedly prompt further internal deliberation. The challenge will be to balance network security, miner incentives, and community sentiment while staying true to Dogecoin’s decentralized ethos.

Any decision to alter the merge mining mechanism would represent a significant shift for Dogecoin. It would necessitate a careful evaluation of potential risks and benefits, potentially impacting its mining ecosystem and broader market perception. The conversation around this issue is likely to continue as developers and the community grapple with how best to secure one of the crypto world’s most recognizable assets.
