Bitcoin holds firm as $101 billion SpaceX unlock begins

Bitcoin (BTC) is holding steady above the $64,000 mark today, August 6, 2026, demonstrating notable resilience. This stability comes as the first tranche of a monumental $101 billion worth of Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) shares became tradable. The event marks the initial phase of a staggered lock-up expiration for the Elon Musk-led aerospace company.

Such a significant liquidity event in traditional markets would typically trigger broader volatility. However, Bitcoin’s ability to absorb this pressure, especially from a company known for its own crypto holdings, suggests a maturing market dynamic. Traders are closely monitoring the interplay between these two distinct but connected financial arenas.

Bitcoin’s unexpected resilience above $64,000

Bitcoin has largely maintained its footing, trading just above $64,600 as of Thursday. It saw a marginal gain on the day and is up 0.5% on the week. This performance contrasts with the mixed results seen across other major cryptocurrencies.

Ether, for instance, rose over 1% to $1,904 but remains down 0.7% over seven days. Meanwhile, XRP was the weakest of its group, falling almost 3% to $1.04. BNB slipped over 1% to $595, although it still leads the majors over the past week with a 3.5% gain.

Alex Kuptsikevich of FxPro noted that Bitcoin has gained momentum since Monday. Buyers stepped in to defend the dip towards $62,500, pushing the price back above the 50-day moving average. He believes optimism is centered more on Bitcoin itself rather than the broader crypto market, which is typical for the early stages of a long-term shift.

Historic SpaceX share unlock begins

Today’s unlock at Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) is a significant moment in financial markets. It represents the largest single-day stock unlock in U.S. public listing history. Up to 911.5 million shares became eligible for sale, a tranche valued between $101 billion and $123 billion.

At current prices, this figure is roughly $116 billion. This initial release alone will increase the tradable float by approximately 143%, more than doubling the shares available for public trading. The event was triggered by SpaceX’s first quarterly earnings report on August 4, 2026.

SpaceX went public on June 12, 2026, with shares priced at $135 each. This unlock primarily affects 20% of eligible shares held by employees and early investors. An additional 455.8 million shares were conditionally eligible, but the requirement for SPCX to close at least 30% above its IPO price on five of ten trading days was not met.

SpaceX’s phased share unlock schedule

The lock-up expiration is not a one-time event but rather a staggered release mechanism. Following today’s initial tranche, a series of smaller unlocks are scheduled through the coming months. These releases are designed to gradually increase the public float.

On August 8, 2026, an additional 7% of shares will unlock, bringing the cumulative total to 12%. Small-batch unlocks of 2-3% will continue to occur regularly between late August and October. Specific dates include August 20 (3%), September 9 (3%), September 24 (2%), October 9 (3%), and October 24 (3%), reaching 25% cumulative.

Further unlocks are planned for November 2026, which will see an additional 13% released in two stages (3% + 10%). By December 8, 2026, the 180-day lock-up will conclude with another 3% release, reaching a 40% cumulative total.

The most significant milestone is the founder/Elon Eligibility Unlock on June 12, 2027, when a large 46% of shares, including Elon Musk’s personal holdings, become tradable. The final 3% will be unlocked by September 2027.

SpaceX’s significant Bitcoin holdings

The company at the center of this massive equity event, SpaceX, is also a notable player in the cryptocurrency space. It holds a substantial amount of Bitcoin on its balance sheet. This direct connection adds another layer of scrutiny for crypto traders observing today’s market movements.

SpaceX first disclosed its Bitcoin holdings in its S-1 registration statement with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on May 20, 2026. At that time, the company held 18,712 BTC. The total acquisition cost for these holdings was approximately $661 million, with an average purchase price of about $35,300 per coin.

At Bitcoin’s price of roughly $63,000 on June 12, 2026, these holdings were valued at about $1.18 billion. This makes SpaceX one of the larger corporate holders of Bitcoin among U.S. publicly listed companies. Their continued holding of BTC, despite reporting an unrealized loss of $540 million on crypto holdings in Q2, underscores a long-term conviction.

Broader market sentiment and crypto impact

Today’s events unfolded against a backdrop of softening global risk sentiment. The MSCI All Country World Index, a key global equity benchmark, snapped a five-day rally, falling 0.2%. This decline was partly driven by chipmakers retreating on both sides of the Pacific, signaling a wobble in the broader artificial intelligence (AI) trade.

South Korea’s Kospi index, often seen as a bellwether for the AI sector, dropped 4.4%, with SK Hynix and Samsung leading the losses. Conversely, gold rose 0.4% to its strongest level since June, as traders trimmed their expectations for future rate hikes. Brent crude oil also remained under $80 a barrel.

SoftBank’s results, expected later Thursday, are also being watched as a gauge of private AI investment. The company has invested $34.6 billion in OpenAI since September 2024 through Vision Fund 2. Bitcoin’s stability amid these traditional market shifts suggests its growing maturity and potential for decoupling from broader macroeconomic pressures.

This resilience is particularly noteworthy given the direct ties between Bitcoin and a major player in the current equity spotlight.
