Bitcoin closes best quarter since 2024 with a 40% price surge

Bitcoin closes its strongest quarter in nearly two years, surging approximately 40% between July 1 and September 30, 2026. This performance marks a decisive return to form for the leading cryptocurrency. It reinforces convictions that a new bull market is firmly underway.

This rally, Bitcoin’s best since the fourth quarter of 2024, has been driven by a confluence of macroeconomic factors. These primarily stem from actions by the U.S. Treasury and growing concerns over sovereign debt. The price recently consolidated around $83,698, holding its ground after a significant run-up that began in late summer.

Macroeconomic shifts provide powerful tailwinds as Bitcoin closes

Much of the recent momentum can be traced to an August 19 announcement from the U.S. Treasury. It stated it would more than double the size of its government debt repurchases.

This move is designed to inject liquidity into the market and help lower bond yields, which had climbed to levels not seen in over two decades. The persistent bond selloff had previously created headwinds for risk assets.

Lowering long-term yields is broadly seen as bullish for non-yielding assets like Bitcoin and gold. It reduces the opportunity cost of holding them compared to interest-bearing government bonds. While yields have remained stubbornly high despite the Treasury’s intervention, Bitcoin’s price has continued its upward trajectory. This suggests investors are front-running the expected effects of the policy.

The rally also coincides with a revival of the so-called “debasement trade.” This strategy involves investors moving capital into scarce assets to hedge against the loss of purchasing power in fiat currencies. With total U.S. national debt crossing the $40 trillion threshold for the first time in July, concerns over currency debasement have intensified. This pushes investors toward alternatives like Bitcoin.

This fundamental driver has provided a strong narrative for Bitcoin’s resilience. The asset has largely ignored otherwise bearish news. This includes the Federal Reserve’s ongoing interest rate hikes and the legislative blockage of the landmark crypto bill, the Clarity Act. This suggests the market is currently more attuned to macroeconomic stability than to sector-specific regulatory updates.

Technical indicators confirm bull market thesis

The strong quarterly performance is not just a story of macroeconomics. Key technical indicators also support the bullish outlook. According to a recent report from the on-chain analytics firm CryptoQuant, Bitcoin’s move above its 365-day moving average represents a “definitive technical signal.” This has historically marked the beginning of sustained bull markets.

This signal is seen by many analysts as a confirmation that the market has transitioned from a recovery phase into a new expansionary cycle. It follows a period of significant volatility. After reaching an all-time high of $126,080 in October, Bitcoin’s price fell by over 50%.

However, this downturn has been described as the shallowest bear market in the asset’s history. This indicates a strong baseline of support and holder conviction that prevented a more severe drawdown.

Market data suggests a shift in sentiment away from short-term speculation. While Bitcoin futures data has at times signaled doubt, the spot market’s performance indicates a clear underlying demand. The ability of the price to absorb negative news and continue its climb points to a mature and resilient market structure.

This resilience is further evidenced by consistent accumulation from market participants, indicating a long-term belief in the asset’s value proposition that is less swayed by short-term market fluctuations. This sustained demand creates a stable base of support for the price.

Assessing market durability and outlook

As Bitcoin enters the final quarter of 2026, the key question is whether this momentum can be sustained. The primary driver, the Treasury’s debt buyback program, is set to continue, which should provide ongoing support. However, the market’s reaction to persistently high bond yields remains a variable to watch closely.

If yields continue to rise despite the Treasury’s efforts, it could eventually put pressure on all risk assets.

Furthermore, while the market has shrugged off recent regulatory setbacks, the global regulatory landscape remains a source of potential friction. Unforeseen legislative or enforcement actions in key jurisdictions could still inject volatility into the market. For now, however, investors appear focused on the clear and present reality of monetary expansion and sovereign debt growth.

After a 6% gain over the past 30 days, the recent price consolidation around the $83,000 level is seen as a healthy sign. It allows the market to establish a new support base before a potential next leg up. Indeed, Bitcoin’s recent surge past $86,000 on September 21, 2026, underscored its upward trajectory.

The market’s ability to hold these gains, especially after such a rapid quarterly surge, will be a critical test of its underlying strength.

Ultimately, the 40% gain in the third quarter serves as a powerful statement. It reflects Bitcoin’s growing role as a macroeconomic asset, responding directly to global fiscal and monetary policy.

The performance has solidified investor confidence and positions Bitcoin for a dynamic end to the year as it continues to navigate the complex interplay between government policy, inflation, and the search for a reliable store of value.
