Tom Lee Robinhood Stock Warning Ignites Wall Street Dispute

The recent Tom Lee Robinhood investment warning has triggered a sharp debate across Wall Street. On August 19, 2026, the Head of Research at Fundstrat Global Advisors advised clients to steer clear of the popular trading platform. This controversial stance emerged despite the company reporting record-breaking financial results for the second quarter of 2026.

Lee updated his core stock selections by adding traditional financial giants like JPMorgan Chase to his recommended portfolio. However, his decision to label Robinhood Markets as a stock to avoid met immediate resistance. Critics believe the firm is successfully capitalizing on aggressive crypto strategies to fuel its next phase of expansion.

Why analysts dispute the Tom Lee Robinhood call

The pushback against the cautious investment recommendation was swift and highly public. Speaking on CNBC, Capital Wealth Planning founder Kevin Simpson disagreed directly with the downbeat assessment. He pointed out that the brokerage has successfully outgrown its early reputation as a volatile meme-stock venue.

Simpson cited the trading platform’s massive second-quarter performance as clear evidence of long-term operational success. The brokerage reported a 32% year-over-year revenue increase to a record $1.31 billion. This impressive performance beat average Wall Street analyst expectations by roughly 2%.

The firm’s bottom line showed even more explosive momentum during the quarter. Diluted earnings per share jumped 48% to $0.62, beating consensus forecasts of $0.55 by more than 12%. Net income officially reached $573 million during the same period.

This stellar earnings profile makes the analyst’s execution and valuation warnings difficult for many investors to accept. Net deposits also spiked to a record $22 billion for the quarter. This represents an impressive annualized growth rate of 28% relative to total platform assets.

Robinhood stock metrics and shifting market sentiment

Market pricing suggests that retail and institutional investors remain highly supportive of the business. On August 19, 2026, Robinhood stock traded at $98.46, giving the firm an impressive $86.54 billion market capitalization. The stock continues to show strong upward momentum following its July earnings release.

The consensus rating among 26 financial analysts currently stands at a “Moderate Buy.” Their average price target of $120.52 indicates substantial upside potential for the equity. This bullish outlook contrasts sharply with the Fundstrat recommendation to avoid the asset.

Some portfolio managers are taking a more nuanced view of the company’s market momentum. Brenda Vingiello, chief investment officer at Sand Hill Global Advisors, recently liquidated her shares. She cited a short-term breakdown in price momentum as her primary reason.

However, Vingiello also acknowledged that a broader digital asset recovery could quickly revive the equity. The company remains highly sensitive to market-wide retail interest. It remains a key proxy for retail participation in crypto funds performance over the long term.

Examining the rapid growth of Robinhood Chain

While its retail brokerage business remains highly profitable, the firm is actively diversifying its revenue. Its transaction revenues from digital currency trading actually fell 38% year-over-year to $100 million. This sharp decline forced the company to pivot toward on-chain decentralized infrastructure.

To lead this transition, the company launched Robinhood Chain in July 2026. This proprietary layer-2 network is built directly on the Arbitrum blockchain ecosystem. It aims to support decentralized lending, stablecoin settlement, and round-the-clock trading services.

The network has achieved rapid early adoption among active on-chain participants. According to decentralized finance tracking portal DefiLlama, the network’s total value locked has surpassed $550 million. This rapid growth highlights strong user demand for its new products.

Stablecoins represent a massive portion of this on-chain decentralized liquidity. The platform’s proprietary dollar-pegged asset, USDG, accounts for more than half of the total stablecoin pool. This success shows that the platform can attract significant decentralized capital.

Tokenized assets and the infrastructure pivot

Beyond stablecoins, the network is carving out a major niche in on-chain tokenization. Traditional financial structures are quickly migrating to decentralized systems. Real-world assets and tokenized real-world assets make up roughly 25% of the total value locked on the chain.

This infrastructure play represents a fundamental shift in the company’s business model. It reduces reliance on volatile retail trading volumes. Instead, it positions the brokerage as a core Web3 protocol operator in the digital asset sector.

Some critics argue that speculative activity still dominates the new network. For example, a recent branded token listing triggered a massive 100% meme coin rally. It remains unclear if serious institutional tools will ultimately define the network’s future.

Nevertheless, the platform’s execution continues to outpace its early limitations. Its expansion into registered investment advising and custody shows mature corporate planning. These strategic moves directly challenge the valuation risks raised by Fundstrat’s cautious outlook.

Strategic acquisitions and future revenue streams

The company is also aggressively expanding its footprint through strategic acquisitions. By purchasing a registered investment adviser, the brokerage has unlocked access to wealthier, long-term investors. This move helps stabilize its revenue during broader market downturns.

Its proprietary in-house custodial platform represents another key operational milestone. This native technology allows the firm to process and clear trades without relying on third-party financial institutions. Consequently, the transition dramatically improves overall transaction margins.

This shift has also been bolstered by the rapid growth of its subscription programs. Robinhood Gold subscribers reached a record 4.8 million in the second quarter. This represents an impressive 39% increase compared to the previous year.

These members provide the company with a highly predictable recurring revenue stream. The recurring cash flows help offset the inherent volatility of retail trading commissions. This makes the overall business far more resilient than traditional analysts assume.
