Yet, these two data points alone leave an essential question unanswered: is this rally supported by fresh capital entering the market, or are existing traders simply shuffling the same positions back and forth without real conviction?
This is precisely the blind spot that open interest was designed to clear. By tracking the total number of outstanding derivative contracts that remain open at any given moment, this metric provides a peek behind the curtain of price action. It allows market observers to distinguish between healthy, capital-backed momentum and fragile market illusion.
Separating frantic activity from real conviction
To understand why open interest is so widely monitored by analysts, one must first break down the difference between market activity and market commitment. Trading volume measures activity: it records how many contracts changed hands over a specific period, regardless of whether those trades opened new positions or closed old ones. Open interest, on the other hand, measures commitment.
It calculates the total number of active obligations that have not yet been settled, expired, or closed out by an offsetting trade.
The mechanics are surprisingly straightforward. Consider a perpetual futures contract with an open interest of 10,000 contracts. If a trader enters the market and opens a brand-new position of 500 contracts, open interest rises to 10,500. If, on the following day, another trader closes 200 existing contracts while a third participant opens 300 new ones, the net result is an increase of 100 contracts, pushing the indicator to 10,600.
