Augustus Secures $180 Million for Stablecoin-Ready Global Dollar Bank Vision

Augustus, a fintech startup founded in 2022, has successfully raised $180 million in a Series B funding round, pushing its valuation to $1 billion. This significant capital injection is set to fuel the company’s ambitious plan to establish a federally chartered clearing bank, specifically designed to integrate stablecoins and modernize the backbone of global dollar transactions for international financial institutions.

The funding, led by Tiger Global, underscores a growing investor appetite for infrastructure that bridges the gap between traditional banking and the rapidly evolving world of digital assets. Augustus isn’t just building another crypto platform; it’s wiring stablecoin rails directly into the regulated financial system, a move that could reshape how money moves across borders.

integrating stablecoin technology into traditional finance

Augustus is not venturing into issuing its own stablecoin. Instead, the company focuses on creating a robust infrastructure that allows banks and fintechs to seamlessly transact using both traditional payment systems and blockchain networks. This approach addresses the inherent limitations of the current correspondent banking model, which often struggles with speed and availability.

The company’s platform supports operating and FBO (For Benefit Of) accounts, facilitating transactions across established channels like Swift, ACH, and SEPA, as well as through stablecoins. This dual capability is powered by its proprietary core banking system, dubbed “Marble,” which reportedly leverages artificial intelligence to enable faster settlement times and continuous 24/7/365 operations.

The regulatory groundwork for this vision is already in place. Augustus secured conditional approval for a U.S. national bank charter from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) in May.

This makes it only the eighth bank to receive such approval since 2010, signaling a potential shift in how regulators view fintech innovation within the banking sector. The conditional charter is a critical step towards offering direct U.S. dollar clearing services, pending final approval.

the vision for a global dollar bank

Ferdinand Dabitz, the chief executive officer and co-founder of Augustus, articulates a clear mission: “dollarize the world.” He believes the core problem in financial services distribution lies at the clearing bank level, where outdated systems create bottlenecks.

The current correspondent banking framework, according to Dabitz, is “slow, not available 24/7, require two days to settle, and are closed on weekends,” a stark contrast to the always-on nature of blockchain.

This vision extends beyond mere efficiency gains; it carries geopolitical implications. Augustus frames its efforts partly as a strategic counter to initiatives like China’s digital yuan and Russia’s proposed BRICS Pay, which could challenge the dominance of Western currencies.

By expanding high-quality dollar access globally, particularly in regions like Latin America, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa where dollar access can be limited, Augustus aims to reinforce the dollar’s international standing.

The expansion into these regions is a key target for the newly raised capital. This strategy aligns with a broader push for financial inclusion and efficient cross-border payments, often a pain point for businesses and individuals alike. Offering programmable, always-on settlement through stablecoin integration could significantly streamline international trade and remittances.

a vote of confidence from investors and regulators

The Series B round saw strong participation from a diverse group of investors, beyond just lead investor Tiger Global. Hummingbird and QED also joined, alongside founders of prominent fintech and crypto companies such as Nubank, Ramp, Circle, and Deel. Individual figures like Circle co-founder Sean Neville and former Coinbase Chief Technology Officer Balaji Srinivasan also contributed, highlighting cross-industry belief in Augustus’s model.

Nigel Morris, a QED Managing Partner, emphasized the disruptive potential, stating that “correspondent banking is the last part of the bank stack that has yet to be challenged by Fintechs.” He noted that the prevailing political climate, particularly under the Trump administration, has fostered an environment more receptive to fintech innovation and new bank charters, aligning with a policy goal of expanding dollar dominance.

The total equity funding secured by Augustus now stands at approximately $210 million, including an earlier $20 million Series A round in 2023 led by Peter Thiel’s Valar Ventures. This consistent backing suggests a sustained belief in the company’s ability to execute its complex strategy of intertwining cutting-edge blockchain technology with stringent banking regulations.

transforming the core of cross-border transactions

Augustus’s focus on correspondent banking is particularly salient. This often-overlooked segment of banking is crucial for enabling international money transfers between institutions. The traditional process can be cumbersome, involving multiple intermediaries and delays, which impacts everything from business payments to personal remittances.

By offering a modern, API-first platform and utilizing its Marble core banking system, Augustus seeks to dramatically improve this process. Their approach provides direct access to U.S. dollar clearing, bypassing some of the historical inefficiencies. This not only promises faster and cheaper transactions but also aims for a level of transparency and availability that traditional systems can’t match.

The leadership team further strengthens this ambition, bringing a blend of traditional finance and regulatory expertise. Greg Quarles, President of Augustus, previously served as a bank CEO and a senior regulator at the OCC.

Benjamin Alexander, former Chief Compliance Officer at Column and an executive at JPMorgan and HSBC, also contributes significant experience in compliance and global financial services. This combination of deep industry knowledge and regulatory insight is crucial for navigating the complex landscape of banking innovation.

Augustus also operates a regulated European subsidiary, Ivy Pay Oy, which is licensed by Finland’s financial regulator and already provides euro clearing services. This existing operational footprint demonstrates their capability to handle regulated financial services beyond their impending U.S. dollar operations, and includes major clients like crypto exchange Kraken.

This track record lends credibility to their claims of being able to provide a fully integrated, compliant, and efficient global dollar bank solution. The ambition here is to move the industry from workarounds to direct, regulated, and always-on infrastructure.
