Aztec V5 upgrade delivers private execution environment for Ethereum L2

Crypto privacy project Aztec has rolled out its V5 alpha upgrade, introducing a full private execution environment to its decentralized Ethereum Layer 2 (L2) network. This significant update, passed by token-holder governance and executed onchain Tuesday, July 21, 2026, aims to establish fully private transactions as the default within the wider Ethereum ecosystem.

The core innovation lies in “client-side proving,” a method allowing users to generate end-to-end private transactions directly on their own devices, from smartphones to consumer laptops. Aztec co-founder Zac Williamson told The Block that this approach retains crypto’s inherent censorship resistance and decentralization.

How the Aztec V5 upgrade enhances transaction speed and cuts costs

The V5 alpha upgrade dramatically improves both the speed and cost efficiency of private transactions. According to a press release, private transaction proving times have been reduced by more than two times, with the average cost of a fully private transaction cut by roughly 50%.

This means a private transaction on a consumer laptop can now prove in approximately 2.5 seconds, down from 5.2 seconds on V4. Browser-based proving times have also seen improvement, moving from 12.5 seconds to roughly 6.8 seconds.

Beyond individual transaction speed, average block production time on the network has been shortened from 14 seconds to just six seconds. Aztec also managed to lower the cost of verifying rollup proofs on Ethereum by about 40%, bringing the average fee for a fully private token transfer to under $0.05.

Williamson highlighted these advancements, stating that the network is now “the fastest system in the world for proving a fully private transaction entirely on a user’s own device.” He emphasized the goal of making the process seamless for users, even if initial private transactions might take slightly longer than typical MetaMask interactions.

Client-side proving and the PXE

Aztec’s approach with “client-side proving” distinguishes it from many other zero-knowledge (ZK) projects, which typically rely on centralized data centers for proof generation. This shift empowers users by processing sensitive data locally.

Central to this is the new “Chonk” system, specifically designed to optimize ZK proof computation on standard consumer hardware. Additionally, the Private Execution Environment (PXE), pronounced “pixie,” functions as a client-side TypeScript library. It manages private execution, proof generation, and secret handling within Node.js, wallet software, or a browser.

The V5 architecture also supports hybrid public-private smart contracts. This allows developers to integrate both transparent and confidential elements within a single contract, offering greater flexibility for decentralized applications. human.tech, a privacy-first digital identity company, has already released its Clean SDK for developers building on Aztec, expanding the ecosystem’s utility.

Addressing V4 vulnerabilities and robust security

This V5 alpha release arrives months after Aztec had to warn users away from its previous V4 version due to critical vulnerabilities discovered in March. Co-founder Zac Williamson acknowledged V4 as their “very first launch” and its challenges, including impacts from the acceleration of AI at the time.

He confirmed that V4 still has active vulnerabilities, hence the recommendation against its use. In response, Aztec has channeled substantial resources into bolstering V5’s security. This effort included a Cantina bug bounty program, which saw participation from 234 security researchers.

Williamson also mentioned the team’s aggressive exploration of formal methods and formal verification. These are mathematical proofs used to rigorously confirm a system behaves exactly as intended, a critical step for maintaining trust in privacy-focused protocols. A detailed security roadmap is set to be released soon.

Broader impact on Ethereum privacy

Aztec’s long-term vision extends beyond its current capabilities, aiming to create a “privacy shield for all of crypto,” initially focusing on Ethereum but with plans for broader integration via bridges. The V5 upgrade integrates 13 AZIPs (Aztec Improvement Proposals), demonstrating a comprehensive development effort.

This push for programmable privacy on Ethereum applications could significantly reduce risks like front-running and Maximal Extractable Value (MEV). For instance, Tuesday’s release enables new use cases, such as privately earning yield on Aave through the wallet project Nyx, with Shield and TRAIN also providing bridges to Ethereum.

In a notable endorsement, Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin recently launched a demo for an anonymous message board on Aztec. He noted that the scaling solution has achieved “Stage 2” decentralization by his own classification standards for Layer 2s, signaling a mature and resilient network.

Buterin is also a financial backer of Aztec, which has successfully raised over $119 million in total funding, including a $100 million Series B round led by a16z.

Aztec’s consistent development pace, maintaining a roughly two-month upgrade cadence since its public testnet launch in May 2025, underscores its commitment. The Ignition Chain, which launched in mid-November 2025 and serves as the foundation for the V5 execution environment, further illustrates their methodical approach to building a robust, decentralized privacy solution.

The public testnet launch, followed by the rigorous testing of the Ignition Chain with empty blocks to verify decentralization, highlights the project’s foundational work. Code development for V5 was completed by June 29, 2026, leading to governance approval in late June, just before the onchain execution.

This structured rollout aims to ensure stability and security as applications begin to launch over the week of July 20, 2026.
