Ethereum Reserves Fall to Multi-Year Low as Staking Hits Record

Ethereum reserves on crypto exchanges have fallen to 14.88 million ETH, their lowest level in years. At the same time, a record share of the network’s circulating supply is locked in staking, creating a market where fewer coins are sitting within easy reach of traders.

The numbers are striking because the decline has been building for more than a year. On July 1, 2025, exchanges held 21.3 million ETH. By September 8, 2026, that figure had fallen by roughly 6.42 million ETH.

Those coins have not simply disappeared. They have moved into personal wallets, institutional custody arrangements and staking contracts, reducing the amount of ETH immediately available on centralized exchanges.

The trend is visible at Binance, too. Its ETH reserves have slipped to around 3.74 million tokens, the exchange’s lowest level in three months.

The bigger historical picture makes the shift harder to ignore. In 2021, crypto exchanges collectively held more than 33 million ETH. Five years later, the amount sitting on platforms has been cut by more than half.

There have been several notable steps along the way. Exchange reserves were near 16.2 million ETH in January 2026, dropped below 15 million by the end of April, and stood at about 15.1 million ETH on July 23.

Now, 14.88 million ETH remains.

Ethereum reserves are also shrinking as staking absorbs more of the circulating supply. According to CryptoQuant data, around 43.1 million ETH was staked as of September 8, equivalent to roughly 35.91% of the total circulating supply.

That is a record for Ethereum and another jump in a trend that has steadily intensified. The staking share reached around 30% at the start of 2026, climbed to 32% in May and has now moved close to 36%.

For market watchers, the implication is straightforward: a larger slice of ETH is being held in positions that are not readily available for immediate trading. That does not automatically mean prices must rise, but it does change the balance between liquid supply and potential demand.

Then there are the ETFs.

US spot Ethereum ETFs have attracted roughly $2.345 billion in net inflows since July 1, 2026, according to SoSoValue data. Their assets under management have reached about $15.57 billion.

The pace, however, has cooled. Net inflows totaled $218.4 million last week, down sharply from the $824 million recorded the week before.

Whale behavior tells a similarly mixed story. Large holders accumulated about 82,000 ETH over the week, while investors in smaller wallet ranges distributed much more.

Wallets holding between 1,000 and 10,000 ETH sold around 214,000 ETH, while those holding between 100 and 1,000 ETH sold another 93,000. Together, those groups distributed approximately 307,000 ETH during the week, according to CryptoQuant.

So the supply picture is tightening, but the demand story is not moving in a straight line.

Ethereum reserves are now sitting alongside a price structure that traders are watching closely. On September 8, ETH was trading around $2,470, down about 1% over 24 hours but still up 1.96% over seven days.

Technically, the token remained above its 20-, 50-, 100- and 200-period exponential moving averages, a setup generally viewed as supportive for the medium-term trend.

The immediate resistance levels were around $2,544, $2,626 and $2,786. On the downside, support appeared near $2,431, followed by the 20-period EMA at $2,385, the 50-period EMA at $2,192 and the 200-period EMA at $2,183.

Another point on the chart is attracting attention. Analyst Ali Martinez, using the URPD, or UTXO Realized Price Distribution, identified a major support area around $2,475, where roughly 2.86 million ETH had previously changed hands.

Above that sits a much heavier zone between $2,723 and $2,822, where more than 10 million ETH were traded. The size of that range makes it a significant test should ETH move higher.

For now, Ethereum is caught between two forces: a shrinking pool of exchange-held coins and slowing short-term ETF demand, with different groups of holders moving in opposite directions.

That tension makes the latest drop in Ethereum reserves more than just another supply statistic. The real question is whether reduced liquid supply can eventually meet enough new demand to push ETH through the resistance waiting above it.
