What Neymar’s NFT Investment Teaches About Crypto Market Euphoria Cycles

During the peak of the NFT boom between 2021 and 2022, celebrities, athletes, and investors competed to acquire digital assets that promised to represent the future of ownership on the internet.

Among the most prominent names was Neymar Jr., who drew attention after spending roughly $1 million on NFTs from the Bored Ape Yacht Club collection, one of the most popular projects of that era.

At the time, the purchase was seen as a symbol of the market’s strength. Owning a rare NFT was not only considered an investment but also a status symbol within the crypto community. Just a few years later, however, many of those assets lost a significant portion of their market value.

The episode is not merely a story about NFTs. It illustrates a pattern that repeatedly appears throughout the cryptocurrency industry: cycles of euphoria, rapid growth, excessive expectations, and deep corrections.

Why the Crypto Market Creates Such Intense Cycles of Enthusiasm

The digital asset sector combines two elements that have historically generated extreme movements in financial markets: technological innovation and speculation.

Whenever a new narrative emerges—whether it is Bitcoin, NFTs, the metaverse, memecoins, artificial intelligence, or tokenization—investors attempt to anticipate its future potential.

In many cases, expectations of future growth attract more attention than the actual adoption of the technology itself.

This phenomenon creates a relatively predictable cycle. First, a promising innovation emerges. Investors and companies then begin to see growth opportunities. Rising demand pushes prices higher, attracting new participants and further accelerating valuations.

Eventually, however, expectations begin to exceed reality.

Projects with weak fundamentals enter the market, valuations become increasingly difficult to justify, and capital starts chasing faster and faster returns. When enthusiasm fades, the correction is often just as dramatic as the previous rally.

This is exactly what happened across much of the NFT market. While the technology itself continues to exist and find applications in specific sectors, the prices paid during the height of the frenzy ultimately proved unsustainable.

The Same Pattern Appears in New Trends

The NFT story demonstrates how the crypto market often confuses long-term potential with immediate price appreciation.

A technology can be genuinely important while still experiencing a speculative bubble. The fact that an innovation survives does not mean that every asset associated with it will maintain elevated valuations.

Today, some analysts see similarities between the NFT cycle and several narratives dominating the current market. Memecoins, AI-related tokens, and numerous emerging projects continue to attract large amounts of capital and attention across social media, often before establishing sustainable business models.

That does not mean these trends are destined to fail. On the contrary, many technologies that emerged during previous market cycles continue to evolve and find real-world applications. The key is separating the long-term potential of a technology from the market’s temporary excitement.

The Main Lesson for Investors

Perhaps the biggest lesson from Neymar’s NFT investment is that popularity is not the same as sustainable value.

During periods of intense enthusiasm, investors often believe certain assets will continue rising indefinitely. Yet, financial market history shows that no narrative grows forever without eventually facing a period of adjustment.

The same principle applies to NFTs, memecoins, artificial intelligence, tokenization, and virtually every major technological or financial innovation.

Euphoria cycles are part of the process through which markets discover and fund new technologies.

They help attract capital, accelerate development, and increase adoption. At the same time, they also create excesses that are eventually corrected by the market.

For that reason, experienced investors tend to focus not only on the potential of a trend but also on the level of expectations already reflected in prices.

In the crypto market, the difference between a major opportunity and a speculative bubble often has less to do with the technology itself and more to do with investor behavior.

The NFT story shows that narratives change, but the underlying cycle remains remarkably similar. Understanding that pattern may be just as important as identifying the next promising asset.
