Nethermind, a prominent engineering firm and core contributor to the Ethereum ecosystem, announced on August 19, 2026, that it is ceasing its role as a verifier for LayerZero. The company will migrate its cross-chain operations to Chainlink, joining as a node operator and strategic technology provider after what it called an “extensive review.”
The move represents a significant realignment in the competitive cross-chain infrastructure space. Nethermind will now help secure Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) and its widely used Data Feeds, embedding itself deeply within its new partner’s ecosystem.
Nethermind drops LayerZero for Chainlink
Nethermind’s transition is more than a simple change of service providers; it’s a strategic commitment to Chainlink’s infrastructure. In its new capacity, the firm will not only run a node but also contribute engineering tools, infrastructure services, and integration support for developers building on the network, signaling a deep technical alignment.
According to Nethermind CEO Daniel Celeda, the decision was a deliberate, long-term choice. “Being a node operator carries real responsibility for a network’s reliability, and that’s consistent with how we approach every engineering commitment we make,” Celeda stated. He added that the decision reflects the firm’s conviction in the infrastructure that will define the next era of onchain finance.
A spokesperson for Chainlink described the decision as a “notable shift by a prominent LayerZero infrastructure operator toward Chainlink’s secure-by-default architecture.” This perspective frames the migration as a validation of Chainlink’s security model, particularly as institutional interest in decentralized finance continues to build.
While Nethermind had what it described as “early participation in LayerZero DVNs,” this new chapter consolidates its focus entirely onto the Chainlink ecosystem for its interoperability needs. The company said it would provide updates on the migration but has not set a public timeline for its completion.
Unspoken context of the LayerZero exodus
Nethermind is not the first company to make this switch. It joins a growing list of firms, including BitGo and Kelp DAO, that have recently moved cross-chain operations from LayerZero to Chainlink. This trend has gained momentum in the months following a high-profile security incident involving a LayerZero-powered bridge.
In April 2026, Kelp DAO’s rsETH bridge suffered a devastating exploit, resulting in a loss of approximately $292 million at the time. LayerZero later acknowledged a mistake in its configuration, which allowed the bridge to operate with a 1-of-1 validation scheme for high-value transactions, creating a single point of failure.
These kinds of costly security incidents have put intense pressure on protocols to demonstrate robust security.
It’s important to note, however, that Nethermind did not publicly connect its decision to the Kelp DAO incident or any other specific technical issue with LayerZero. The company has framed its move purely as a strategic choice based on its own extensive review. The financial terms of the new arrangement with Chainlink were also not disclosed.
The series of migrations highlights the intense competition and high stakes in the blockchain interoperability sector. As protocols compete for transaction volume and developer adoption, security, reliability, and the strength of a protocol’s partner ecosystem have become critical differentiating factors. A decision by an infrastructure provider as respected as Nethermind sends a powerful signal to the market.
Nethermind’s deep roots in Ethereum
The significance of Nethermind’s decision is amplified by its stature within the crypto ecosystem. Founded in 2017, the firm has grown to over 200 employees and is a cornerstone of Ethereum’s technical development, producing one of the network’s main execution clients used by thousands of validators.
Nethermind’s software currently supports over 16,000 Ethereum validators, securing more than $5 billion in delegated assets. Its infrastructure and expertise are trusted by some of the largest and most innovative projects in the space, including Lido, EtherFi, Gnosis, StarkWare, World, and Arbitrum. This deep integration makes its strategic choices influential.
Beyond client development and validator operations, Nethermind is heavily involved in blockchain security, offering services like smart contract audits and formal verification for applications on both Ethereum and Starknet. This background in security gives its
