Hypersearch Wants to Rethink Search With a Decentralized Internet

For most people, searching the internet means sending a question to Google, waiting a fraction of a second, and getting an answer from servers controlled by a single company. Hypersearch is built around a very different idea: what if search could work without a central operator at all?

Tether, the company behind the world’s largest stablecoin, is developing Hypersearch as a peer-to-peer search engine designed to distribute both its index and search activity across a network of independent nodes.

The project is still young, but it already has a working demonstration. On May 14, Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino showed a peer-to-peer search engine capable of searching Wikipedia, just weeks after first announcing Hypersearch on April 7, 2026.

Hypersearch is search without the giant central filing cabinet

The basic premise is deceptively simple. Conventional search engines crawl websites, assemble enormous indexes on infrastructure they control, and process queries through centralized systems.

Hypersearch moves those functions into a distributed network. Instead of relying on one company’s servers to maintain the index and handle every query, the system spreads that work across participating machines.

Its technical foundation is Kademlia, a distributed hash table, or DHT, architecture that lets computers locate and retrieve information across a network without depending on a single coordinator.

Hypersearch runs on Tether’s HyperDHT infrastructure alongside the Holepunch technology stack. The latter is designed to establish direct connections between devices, including systems operating behind firewalls or network address translation.

The result is intended to be a network that can reorganize itself as nodes join or leave, without taking search offline. Tether says the architecture is being designed to work across thousands of nodes and support different kinds of information, including text, images and location data.

That makes Hypersearch less like a new search website and more like an attempt to rebuild one of the internet’s most familiar utilities from the network up.

Why Tether is suddenly building internet infrastructure

Hypersearch may sound far removed from stablecoins, but it fits into a broader direction for Tether’s technology projects.

The company already backs Keet, an encrypted messaging application built around peer-to-peer architecture, and PearPass, a password manager built with a similar focus on privacy and distributed systems.

Hypersearch extends that philosophy into one of the internet’s most sensitive habits: what people search for.

Every search query can reveal something about a person’s interests, problems, location or intentions. A decentralized model does not automatically solve every privacy issue, but it changes the underlying question of who needs to sit in the middle of the interaction.

Tether is also recruiting engineers with experience in peer-to-peer networking, Kademlia DHT systems and conflict-free replicated data types, or CRDTs. These data structures allow multiple machines to update shared information independently and reconcile those changes without requiring constant coordination.

That hiring push suggests the company is treating Hypersearch as more than a speculative side project, even though the product itself remains firmly in development.

The Wikipedia demonstration is an important proof point, but it is not a finished consumer search engine. Hypersearch has no public beta, no published whitepaper and an open-source codebase at this stage.

Still, the demo shows that the core concept can work: search information across a distributed network rather than routing everything through one centralized service.

The bigger question for Hypersearch is what happens next. Building a search engine is difficult enough when one company controls the servers, databases and indexing pipeline. Doing it across thousands of independent nodes introduces an entirely different set of engineering challenges.

For now, Hypersearch is best understood as an early experiment in internet infrastructure rather than a Google replacement sitting around the corner. But its direction is notable: Tether is betting that some of the tools people use every day may eventually make more sense when the machinery behind them is distributed.
