Ethena ENA token surges as foundation overhauls investor unlocks and buybacks

The Ethena (ENA) token, native to the decentralized finance protocol best known for its USDe synthetic dollar, saw a substantial price surge on 2026-08-27. This rally followed the Ethena Foundation’s announcement of a major overhaul to the token’s economics, directly addressing long-standing concerns about investor selling pressure and value accrual.

The changes include eliminating future monthly venture capital (VC) token unlocks, repurchasing locked tokens from specific early investors, and a live governance proposal for implementing profit-based ENA buybacks. These strategic adjustments have propelled the Ethena ENA token upward, seeing it climb 23% in the 24 hours leading up to August 27, reaching $0.17.

Strategic shift to boost Ethena ENA token value accrual

The Ethena Foundation has moved decisively to strengthen the link between the ENA token and the protocol’s economic success. This comprehensive plan tackles two critical issues that have previously weighed on ENA’s performance: consistent selling pressure from early investors and ambiguity regarding the token’s direct benefit from the protocol’s earnings.

As part of this overhaul, the foundation has formalized an agreement in principle to transfer intellectual property and economic upside from the Ethena protocol to the foundation itself, with governance ultimately resting with ENA holders. This arrangement, expected to be published in October, draws a clearer line between tokenholders’ interests and those of Ethena Labs shareholders.

Ending venture capital token unlocks

A significant component of the new strategy involves completely restructuring the venture capital unlock schedule. The Ethena Foundation confirmed it has bought back remaining locked tokens from certain large seed investors who had been selling ENA over the past nine months.

Furthermore, the foundation and major investors have agreed to accelerate the remaining original investor unlocks, effectively ending the monthly release of VC tokens before October 5, 2026. This move significantly reduces a consistent source of potential supply, which has historically exerted downward pressure on the ENA token price.

It’s worth noting that team tokens will continue to follow their original vesting schedules, maintaining a measured release. This distinction ensures a degree of stability while addressing the more immediate concern of large-scale early investor selling.

Introducing profit-based ENA buybacks

Alongside changes to token unlocks, ENA holders are currently voting on a ‘fee switch’ governance proposal. This proposal aims to create a recurring and scalable source of demand for the token by directing a substantial portion of protocol revenue and net profit towards automatic ENA purchases.

The buyback mechanism would scale with USDe circulation, beginning once the synthetic dollar’s supply reaches specified milestones. Once USDe supply hits $7.5 billion, for example, 95% of net profit attributable to the foundation across all Ethena-branded businesses would be used for programmatic ENA buybacks, with the remaining 5% allocated for growth initiatives.

This initiative, already approved by Ethena’s Risk Committee, directly links the protocol’s profitability to ENA’s market demand. It represents a clear commitment to sharing the economic upside directly with token holders.

Revitalizing USDe growth and broader strategy

These economic adjustments come as Ethena works to revive the growth trajectory of its USDe synthetic dollar. USDe’s supply had seen a sharp reversal, falling below $5 billion from a peak near $15 billion in October 2025.

USDe generates returns primarily from derivatives funding rates and staking rewards from assets like staked Ether. However, these funding rates dwindled as broader crypto markets cooled, impacting USDe’s yield generation and overall supply.

To diversify and find new avenues for expansion, Ethena has been active in securing new partnerships. Just last week, it announced a $1 billion facility with FalconX, designed to channel USDe backing into overcollateralized institutional loans. This move signals a strategic shift beyond traditional crypto funding rates.

The protocol has also inked deals with major traditional and crypto institutions. Janus Henderson invested in ENA in June and is exploring USDe distribution.

Coinbase’s venture arm purchased ENA and launched a savings product featuring Ethena. These collaborations are crucial for expanding USDe’s reach and utility in both institutional and retail sectors.

Impact and outlook for Ethena’s ecosystem

The comprehensive overhaul has been met with a strong positive market reaction. The ENA token has doubled in price in just over a week, demonstrating investor confidence in Ethena’s renewed tokenomics and growth strategy.

On August 21, 2026, ENA traded at $0.1, surging to $0.17 by August 27. Overall, it has gained 56.5% in a week and 84.6% over the past 30 days. This performance outpaces much of the altcoin market, even amidst a broader crypto rally.

Post-overhaul, approximately 12% of the total ENA supply will remain locked, limited primarily to holdings by the team, ecosystem, and foundation. This significantly reduced locked supply removes much of the speculative overhang that often pressures token prices.

The Ethena Foundation has set an ambitious goal: expanding USDe supply to more than $100 billion within five years. This target highlights the protocol’s long-term vision and its commitment to becoming a dominant force in the synthetic dollar market, underpinned by its newly clarified economic structure.

The strategic moves by Ethena underscore a growing maturity within the DeFi space, where protocols are increasingly prioritizing sustainable value accrual for token holders. By addressing potential points of failure and aligning incentives, Ethena aims to foster a more robust and resilient ecosystem for its USDe synthetic dollar and the ENA token.

The upcoming publication of the Master Framework Agreement in October will provide further details on the intellectual property and value rights transfer. Market participants will be watching closely to see how the governance vote for the fee switch concludes and how USDe supply responds to the new growth initiatives.

This strategic pivot marks a crucial phase for Ethena, signaling a commitment to long-term stability and value creation for its community.
