Deutsche Bank is preparing to bring crypto custody into the same institutional world where clients already keep their traditional assets. The bank’s crypto custody service is expected to go live by the end of 2026, pending the completion of applicable regulatory checks.
Germany’s largest bank said the offering will provide regulated custody for digital assets to European institutional and corporate clients. At launch, the selection will be deliberately narrow, reflecting the bank’s focus on demand, regulation and its own risk appetite.
Bitcoin and ether will be among the supported cryptocurrencies, alongside stablecoins including USDC and EURC. Rather than opening the doors to every token under the sun, Deutsche Bank is starting with a limited set of assets.
Why Deutsche Bank Crypto Custody Matters
The move places digital assets closer to the infrastructure institutions already understand: a familiar bank, regulated custody and an existing relationship with a financial provider.
Gerald Podobnik, Deutsche Bank’s co-head of corporate bank, framed the strategy as an extension of the financial system rather than a replacement for it. “Digital assets are not a replacement for the traditional financial system but an important complement to it,” he said in the announcement.
Podobnik added: “We see them as new rails that coexist with existing marketing infrastructures. The service will be developed in line with client demand, regulatory requirements and the bank’s risk appetite.”
The announcement follows reports from July 2026 that Deutsche Bank was preparing a crypto custody offering with exchange Bitpanda, with a launch planned for sometime this year.
The broader bet is straightforward. As institutions and corporations become more comfortable holding digital assets, custody may increasingly sit with financial companies they already trust with conventional portfolios.
Deutsche Bank is entering a European market where other established banks have already moved in this direction. Standard Chartered and BBVA, both based in Europe, already offer digital asset custody services.
With Deutsche Bank crypto custody now nearing launch, the story is less about turning a traditional bank into a crypto-native platform and more about digital assets becoming another asset category that established financial infrastructure is being built to accommodate.
