Crypto Mining Farm in Mexico Busted After Authorities Find 300 Computers

A crypto mining farm hidden in the highlands of Mexico has been dismantled after authorities uncovered roughly 300 specialized computers allegedly running on stolen electricity tied to federal infrastructure.

The operation was found in Tlaola, a municipality in the northern mountains of Puebla, according to a Sept. 8 report by EL PAÍS. The scale of the setup stood out not just because of its size, but because of where it was plugged in: infrastructure associated with the Nuevo Necaxa hydroelectric dam.

During the raid, investigators seized transformers, medium-voltage electrical equipment, around 300 computing machines and active satellite internet antennas. The equipment suggests a sizable operation designed to keep running far from public view.

Authorities had reportedly received warnings about suspicious activity in the area before identifying an abnormal connection to the power system. Crypto mining is notoriously electricity-hungry, making power access one of the biggest practical challenges for large-scale operations.

That can make remote locations attractive. But in this case, investigators believe the operators went a step further by connecting illegally to infrastructure linked to the hydroelectric complex.

The investigation is still unfolding. Authorities have not determined which cryptocurrencies were being mined, and they are also examining whether the operation may have had ties to money laundering.

Officials are now looking beyond Tlaola, searching nearby municipalities and potentially other states for similar facilities. The discovery has also put a spotlight on how easily an industrial-scale crypto mining farm can blend into isolated areas when electricity demand and operational noise are its most noticeable signatures.

The crypto mining farm problem doesn’t stop at the border

Mexico is hardly alone in dealing with illicit mining operations.

Malaysia has confronted the issue on a much larger scale. According to the country’s energy ministry, national utility Tenaga Nasional lost about $1.11 billion to electricity theft associated with cryptocurrency mining between 2020 and August 2025.

The pattern has also appeared in the United States, albeit in a much stranger setting. Police in Cohasset, Massachusetts, discovered an unauthorized crypto mining installation concealed inside a crawl space beneath a middle and high school.

Back in Puebla, Mexican authorities had already dismantled three other cryptocurrency mining operations in Puebla and neighboring Tlaxcala during 2025, according to EL PAÍS.

The latest case adds another example to a growing list of operations where the economics of mining collide with the physical infrastructure required to power it. A crypto mining farm may exist entirely in the digital economy, but its footprint is very real: transformers, cables, cooling systems, computers and a huge appetite for electricity.

That is precisely what makes illegal mining easier to detect when authorities know where to look. What happens on the blockchain may be invisible to most people. What happens on the power grid can be much harder to hide.
