CoinEx Is Shutting Down After Nine Years as Running an Exchange Gets Harder

For nine years, CoinEx operated as one of the many crypto exchanges competing for traders, liquidity and attention across the internet. Now, the Hong Kong-based platform is preparing to disappear.

CoinEx announced Tuesday that it will cease operations, ending a run that began in 2017. Users can withdraw their funds until Dec. 22, when the exchange will formally close.

Founder and CEO Haipo Yang pointed to a combination of security, compliance and operating pressures behind the decision. CoinEx, he said, had not become one of the industry’s leading exchanges, while the risks involved in running a crypto exchange had become increasingly difficult to contain.

Yang also said he had considered selling CoinEx before deciding against it. His preferred ending was blunt: “A clean ending is the right ending.”

The shutdown is being staged in phases rather than dropped like a trapdoor. CoinEx has already stopped new user registrations, while futures and other services are being wound down before spot trading ends Sept. 29. Withdrawals will remain available through Dec. 22.

CoinEx Shows How Much Harder Exchanges Have Become to Run

CoinEx is not simply leaving a crowded market; its exit arrives as established exchanges face a tougher combination of thinner activity and higher operating demands.

The company’s 24-hour trading volume is just over $70 million, according to CoinGecko, well below the roughly $1.18 billion reported for CoinW and $1.6 billion for Gate in the same comparison.

That gap matters because exchanges live on activity. Lower trading volumes can mean less revenue and liquidity, while compliance requirements continue to demand money, infrastructure and staff.

CoinEx’s own announcement pointed to a prolonged downturn in crypto, shrinking industry-wide trading volume and liquidity, rising regulatory requirements and compliance costs that had become difficult to justify.

The result is a peculiar moment for the crypto internet. The industry may be more mature than it was when CoinEx launched, but maturity also means more scrutiny, more competition and fewer places for mid-sized platforms to hide.

CoinEx is the latest established name to retreat. Bitmart and BitMEX, founded in 2017 and 2014 respectively, also announced closures in July, amid signs of weaker retail spot trading activity.

For users, the most immediate story is practical: CoinEx is closing, and there is a deadline. For the broader market, the more interesting question is what happens when an exchange that survived for almost a decade decides that continuing is no longer worth the cost.
