Cardano Enters the Race to Power AI Agent Payments

Cardano is stepping into a very specific corner of the AI economy: teaching software how to pay for things on the internet.

The blockchain has been added to the official x402 software kit, giving developers the tools to build apps and AI agents that can pay for online services with ADA or tokens issued on the Cardano network.

The idea behind x402 is almost deceptively simple. It takes the web’s largely ignored “402 Payment Required” response and turns it into a payment step embedded directly inside an internet request.

Instead of a person signing up, entering card information and managing a subscription, an AI agent could encounter a price, receive payment instructions, sign the transaction and get access to whatever it requested once the payment is verified.

Picture an agent assembling a report and realizing it needs a dataset. Rather than waiting for a human to open an account or approve a purchase, the software could pay for that single piece of information and keep working.

Cardano Wants AI Agents to Handle Checkout Themselves

That puts Cardano alongside networks including Solana and the XRP Ledger, which already support the x402 standard. Several Ethereum-compatible networks are also part of the system.

Coinbase created x402 in 2025 before contributing the technology to a Linux Foundation-backed organization. Its members include Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Google and Amazon Web Services, tying the project to companies already deeply involved in how money and online services move across the internet.

Cardano’s entry began with a specification accepted in June. Engineers from the Cardano Foundation then built the client and server software required to request payments, along with a facilitator that verifies and submits transactions.

The first release supports TypeScript, with Python planned as the next language. For developers, that means the building blocks for integrating Cardano into machine-to-machine payments are now available.

There is, however, a meaningful line between software that exists and an AI agent routinely paying for things with ADA.

The facilitator documentation says it has completed a real transaction on Cardano’s pre-production network, but it has not yet been tested on mainnet. Developers can start integrating the technology, but the release does not demonstrate AI agents already paying for commercial services with ADA at scale.

For Cardano, the larger question is where developers will eventually build the payment layer for autonomous software. With Solana, XRP Ledger and other networks already supporting x402, the competition is moving beyond who can process transactions and toward who gets embedded into the everyday mechanics of software that can buy, request and consume services on its own.
