BNB Smart Chain BEP-675 Upgrade Targets Near-Double Throughput by August 25

The BNB Smart Chain (BSC) is on the cusp of a significant upgrade, with its BEP-675 update poised to nearly double network throughput without altering existing gas limits or block times. This crucial improvement, which aims to resolve fundamental inefficiencies in how blocks are processed, is expected to roll out on the BSC Mainnet as part of the Pasteur hard fork on August 25, 2026.

The update, officially titled “Builder-Proposed Block with Validator Blind Signing,” fundamentally shifts the block validation process. It addresses a redundancy where both block builders and validators previously executed the same block, consuming a substantial portion of BSC’s 450-millisecond block interval.

Streamlining block processing with the BNB Smart Chain BEP-675 update

Under BSC’s prior “SendBid” system, specialized block builders would assemble and execute transactions, then submit bids to validators. Each validator then had to re-execute every transaction to verify its validity before signing the block. This duplication of effort proved costly, especially given BSC’s rapid block interval.

BEP-675 introduces a new “SendBidBlock” mechanism. Builders can now submit fully executed blocks directly to validators. Validators then primarily sign, broadcast, and compare these blocks against consensus rules, deferring full verification to a later stage.

This change drastically cuts the validator’s critical path overhead. It drops from approximately 125 milliseconds down to just 15 milliseconds. This frees up an additional 100 milliseconds, giving builders more time to pack transactions efficiently into each block.

Testnet Performance Shows Significant Gains

Initial deployments and rigorous testing of BEP-675 on the BSC Testnet, specifically on an internal cross-region QANet setup, have yielded compelling results. These tests aimed to replicate the BNB Smart Chain’s mainnet topology.

The QANet testnet demonstrated an impressive 88% increase in throughput. Transactions per second (TPS) jumped from 1,237 to 2,324. Crucially, this substantial boost came without any change to the 450-millisecond block interval or the 100 million gas limit.

The test results also showed a marked increase in gas utilization. Median gas utilization per block climbed from 29.49 million to 98.99 million, while the average rose from 46.35 million to 84.15 million. This indicates a much more efficient use of the network’s existing block capacity.

Significantly, the measured finality lag, specifically P99 finality, remained stable at one or two blocks despite the higher throughput. This reassures users that transaction confirmation times won’t be adversely affected by the increased network activity.

Integration into BSC’s Aggressive Scaling Roadmap

BEP-675 is not a standalone upgrade; it’s a pivotal component of the BNB Chain development team’s ambitious technical roadmap for the second half of 2026. The proposal for BEP-675 was first drafted on April 10, 2026, marking months of development.

This update follows a series of aggressive scaling initiatives throughout 2025 and the first half of 2026. Earlier phases saw block intervals reduced to 450 milliseconds and in-memory finality shortened to 650 milliseconds, effectively doubling benchmark throughput.

Adopting BEP-675 will require block builders to transition from running fast nodes to full nodes. While this represents a technical shift for builders, regular BNB Smart Chain users should experience no significant interface changes. The primary benefit for users will be the network’s enhanced ability to accommodate more transactions per block.

The upcoming Pasteur hard fork on August 25, 2026, will integrate BEP-675, alongside other planned improvements like FOCIL and Block-Level Access Lists. These are all part of BNB Chain’s broader strategy to continually enhance its performance and competitiveness within the altcoin ecosystem.

Wider Market Context and Future Outlook

The continuous upgrades on the BNB Smart Chain highlight the intense competition among layer-1 blockchain networks. Chains like BSC are constantly pushing for higher transaction speeds and lower costs to attract developers and users, particularly against rivals like Ethereum, Solana, and Avalanche.

BNB Chain has consistently pursued an aggressive upgrade trajectory, with long-term goals targeting a 10x increase in mainnet throughput. The network envisions a “next-generation trading chain” by 2028 capable of handling approximately 1 million TPS with near-instant transaction confirmations, aiming for 150-millisecond finality.

Critics, however, still voice concerns about the BNB Chain’s level of centralization and potential regulatory pressures. These concerns often resurface whenever the network undergoes significant changes or faces exploits, reminding the industry that performance often comes with trade-offs in decentralization.

The efficiency gains from BEP-675 represent a tactical optimization, allowing BSC to better utilize its existing capacity rather than dramatically increasing its theoretical limits. This practical approach to scaling could solidify BNB Smart Chain’s position as a robust platform for decentralized applications, especially as transaction volumes in the crypto space continue to grow.
