Bitcoin Faces an $81,700 Test Before CryptoQuant Calls a New Bull Market

Bitcoin has spent the past two weeks doing exactly what traders want from a rebound: moving fast, recovering ground and briefly flirting with a more convincing trend. Now comes the less glamorous part.

After a 24% climb, Bitcoin has run into a wall between $76,000 and $82,000. CryptoQuant says the broader setup still looks bullish, but there is one level that matters more than the rest: $81,700.

That is roughly where Bitcoin’s 365-day moving average sits, according to Julio Moreno, head of research at CryptoQuant. Historically, the firm has treated a daily close above that average as a marker that a new bull market is officially underway.

For now, Bitcoin is hovering around $77,000. The problem is not a lack of momentum so much as the amount of supply waiting overhead.

CryptoQuant identifies a particularly dense resistance zone between $77,100 and $80,200. Long-term holders sold as much as 539,000 BTC there over a 30-day period this year, creating what Moreno describes as the nearest and heaviest on-chain supply resistance above the current price.

In other words, Bitcoin has not simply bumped into a technical line on a chart. It has arrived at an area where a large amount of existing supply has already changed hands.

Bitcoin Has a $81,700 Problem — and an $88,700 One After That

Breaking through the first resistance zone would still leave Bitcoin with several tests ahead.

The next major hurdle, according to CryptoQuant, is that $81,700 365-day moving average. Moreno says previous Bitcoin bull markets have tended to begin after price moved decisively above this level.

That makes the number more than another technical indicator. It is a kind of historical checkpoint for CryptoQuant’s market-cycle framework.

A clean move above it could strengthen the case that Bitcoin is entering another sustained uptrend. Failure to do so, however, could leave the market stuck in the same frustrating range it has occupied recently.

Above $81,700 sits another level at roughly $83,600, based on CryptoQuant’s 3x Metcalfe band. The model estimates Bitcoin’s value using network activity, including the number of active addresses.

The indicator has also appeared near important moments in previous cycles. When Bitcoin reached its $126,000 all-time high in October 2025, the 3x Metcalfe band was around $138,000. The 2x band, meanwhile, was close to Bitcoin’s price when it first crossed $100,000 in December 2024.

Then comes $88,700.

That is the upper end of CryptoQuant’s trader realized price model, which tracks the average price paid by active traders. Historically, Moreno says, that upper band has been associated with periods when traders begin taking profits.

So even a successful move beyond $81,700 would not necessarily mean Bitcoin has a clear runway. The market would still have to work through several layers of potential selling pressure.

The more immediate question is whether buyers can absorb the supply already sitting between the current price and the low-$80,000s.

CryptoQuant’s reading is still constructive. But its argument is less about predicting an explosive rally and more about identifying what Bitcoin must prove before the market can call the current rebound something bigger.

That proof is relatively simple: Bitcoin needs to get above $81,700 and stay there.

Where Bitcoin Could Find Support

The downside picture matters just as much.

CryptoQuant places Bitcoin’s first major support area near $70,000, which corresponds to its 200-day moving average. That level could become important if the current range breaks lower instead of higher.

Further down, the firm sees support between $62,000 and $65,000. Long-term holders bought about 476,000 BTC in that zone this year, potentially creating another layer of demand.

The contrast is striking. Above Bitcoin sits a series of supply-heavy zones that need to be cleared. Below it are levels where long-term buyers have previously stepped in.

That leaves the market in a familiar but consequential position: Bitcoin’s recent rally has improved the picture, but the next move could determine whether this is the beginning of a new trend or simply another trip around the range.

Moreno’s conclusion is notably measured. “The overall picture remains bullish; Bitcoin simply needs to digest the overhead supply and break its valuation ceilings before a new leg up can develop.”

For now, $81,700 is the number that could turn that thesis from possibility into confirmation.
