Bitcoin Rally Looks Healthy, but Altcoin Leverage Is Flashing a Familiar Warning

Bitcoin is having the kind of rally traders like to see: spot demand is doing the heavy lifting while futures positioning cools down. Altcoins, meanwhile, are telling a much less comfortable story.

On September 6, open interest in altcoin perpetual futures overtook Bitcoin’s for the first time since December 2024, according to Coinalyze data. The split matters because the current Bitcoin move appears increasingly tied to actual spot buying rather than an explosion of leveraged bets.

Michael Bucella, co-founder and managing partner at Neoclassic Capital, described the move as a healthy rotation. In his view, the first leg higher was powered largely by short covering before spot demand and stronger call-option skew took the lead.

That distinction is becoming harder to ignore as traders move further down the risk curve.

Bitcoin Looks Steady. Altcoins Are Getting Crowded.

Zcash has been at the center of the shift. During its decade-high rally, open interest in ZEC derivatives climbed to an all-time high of roughly $2.4 billion.

The move was violent enough to squeeze short sellers, with about $34 million in forced liquidations as Zcash pushed higher.

There is also a fresh narrative attached to the rally. Grayscale has filed to convert its ZEC trust into a spot ETF, giving traders another potential source of demand as speculative positioning expands.

Ether has also outperformed, while tokens connected to Robinhood’s new blockchain have attracted attention of their own. Pons, a memecoin launchpad built on that chain, has helped trigger another burst of token launches.

The pattern is familiar: as a Bitcoin move matures, traders begin reaching for higher-risk assets. The problem is that leverage can build faster than conviction.

Bitcoin Has Seen This Movie Before

Bucella told CNBC’s Halftime Report that current conditions resemble October 2025, shortly before a sharp liquidation hit the broader crypto market.

That does not necessarily mean another market-wide flush is imminent. In fact, Bucella’s argument is almost the opposite: Bitcoin itself looks comparatively healthy because its advance is being supported by spot buying rather than relying entirely on short squeezes.

But the altcoin market is telling a different story.

“I’m not saying that this move isn’t sustainable. I’m just saying you should proceed with a lot of caution.”

That caution is particularly relevant as traders add leverage to smaller and more volatile tokens while Bitcoin’s own positioning remains comparatively restrained.

Bitcoin’s ETF-backed demand has also remained resilient despite a brief run of outflows in late August, according to warning signs highlighted by BeInCrypto in September.

The bigger question now is whether altcoin leverage can unwind without pulling the rest of the market into the same kind of liquidation spiral seen in 2025.

For September, Bitcoin may not be the part of the market that deserves the most attention. The more revealing signal could be what happens around it.
