Bitcoin Has Been the Market’s Only Reliable Winner for Two Years

Bitcoin has pulled away from the rest of the crypto market in a way that is getting harder to ignore. Over the past two years, Bitcoin gained 28%, while the median mid-cap altcoin fell 74%, according to a new report from analytics firm Glassnode and crypto exchange Bybit.

The numbers describe more than a performance gap. They point to a market where gains have become increasingly concentrated around Bitcoin, while much of the rest of crypto has struggled to keep pace.

Ethereum, the market’s second-largest cryptocurrency, was roughly flat over the same period. That leaves a strikingly narrow path to meaningful returns and a long way from the familiar altseason pattern, when money tends to move from Bitcoin into smaller tokens as a rally develops.

The divergence becomes even clearer when leverage enters the picture. Bitcoin’s futures open interest is equivalent to about 2% of its market capitalization, according to the report. For some speculative small caps, that ratio is dramatically higher.

PEPE, for example, sits near 24%. The contrast suggests that the most aggressive positioning has accumulated in the market’s riskiest corners, while Bitcoin has accounted for much of the actual price appreciation.

Bitcoin Is Where the Market’s Attention Has Concentrated

That imbalance is also visible in institutional flows. Spot Bitcoin ETFs have attracted approximately $55.2 billion in cumulative net inflows, far above the roughly $13.1 billion flowing into Ethereum funds.

Ethereum ETFs have recently experienced a multi-day stretch of outflows, adding another wrinkle to the picture. Meanwhile, Solana’s newer spot ETFs have attracted around $29.7 million, a much smaller figure by comparison.

The data comes with important limitations. The report is a joint effort by Glassnode and Bybit, uses data through the settled close of August 23, and reflects Glassnode’s venue coverage rather than the entire crypto market.

Still, the broader question is whether the market is beginning to spread out again.

Bitcoin recently climbed back above $80,000 following a dovish Federal Reserve forecast, and the move lifted the broader crypto market as well. Total crypto market capitalization rose 4.6% in a single day to roughly $2.85 trillion.

This time, some of the bigger alternative tokens moved even faster. Solana gained about 10%, while NEAR and Uniswap posted substantially larger daily gains, creating a glimpse of the broader participation that has been missing for much of the past year.

Bitcoin remains the clearest center of gravity in the data, but those bursts of strength elsewhere raise a more interesting possibility: the market may be testing whether capital can finally move beyond its largest asset again.

For two years, the numbers have told a very different story. Bitcoin gained ground while mid-cap tokens lost much of theirs, and institutional money followed the performance rather than dispersing evenly across the market.

The defining feature of this cycle, at least so far, has been concentration. The next question is whether that concentration is finally starting to loosen.
