Arthur Hayes escalates Ethereum buys as ETH eyes critical breakout

Arthur Hayes, the influential co-founder of BitMEX, has substantially increased his Ethereum (ETH) holdings, making multiple large purchases totaling 3,914.84 ETH by July 26, 2026. This aggressive accumulation comes as Ethereum navigates a critical technical juncture, trading near $1,860 and approaching significant resistance levels that could dictate its short-term trajectory.

His latest moves, closely tracked by on-chain analysts, include a $1.2 million purchase of 644.723 ETH on July 26 via FalconX, following another 644.34 ETH acquisition just two days prior. Such concentrated buying from a prominent figure often serves as a bullish signal, drawing considerable attention from market participants.

Arthur Hayes’ accumulating Ethereum holdings

Hayes’ recent buying spree for Ethereum isn’t an isolated event; it represents a consistent accumulation strategy observed throughout July 2026. Data shows he acquired an additional 644.34 ETH, worth about $1.25 million, on July 24, bringing his total accumulation over the preceding eight days to 3,270 ETH. These purchases were made at an average price of roughly $1,917 per coin, amounting to approximately $6.27 million.

Earlier in the month, a wallet linked to Hayes picked up 1,332.5 ETH, valued at about $2.53 million, on July 21. His July activity kicked off with two other large transactions, including a 646 ETH reception after a USDC transfer involving Galaxy Digital, and another 1,293 ETH for roughly $2.48 million. This pattern underscores a deliberate effort to build his Ethereum position.

Before these July acquisitions, Hayes had also made notable moves in June, purchasing 1.5K ETH tokens valued at $2.6 million. Interestingly, he also sold 6,000 ETH in June at an estimated $606,000 loss, suggesting a dynamic approach to managing his portfolio based on market conditions and his broader macroeconomic outlook.

His total verified on-chain holdings stood at $27 million as of June 19, 2026, with his largest crypto holding being nearly $14 million in USDC stablecoin.

Ethereum price nears critical technical resistance

The cryptocurrency market is closely watching Ethereum’s price action, which currently hovers near $1,860 as of July 26, 2026. This level places it directly beneath a crucial supply zone between $1,880 and $1,910, representing immediate resistance for ETH. Technical indicators also show the declining 100-day moving average near $1,950, adding another layer to the resistance Ethereum must overcome.

A sustained hourly acceptance above $1,813 is considered tactically bullish, with stronger confirmation coming if ETH can hold above $1,800. However, sellers currently maintain control below $1,739. Breaking past the $1,920 resistance and converting it into a support level is essential for Ethereum to pave the way toward $2,000 and potentially $2,050. The next significant long-term resistance looms near $3,945.

Should Ethereum fail to breach the $1,963 resistance, analysts anticipate a pullback. This could see the price drop below $1,900, potentially testing the $1,859 level. On the downside, the immediate support region for Ethereum sits between $1,760 and $1,820.

Losing this support could lead to a further decline toward $1,550 to $1,640, a region that previously served as a long-term accumulation phase support between $1,000 and $1,350.

The impact of prominent investor sentiment on crypto markets

Arthur Hayes’ consistent accumulation of Ethereum is more than just a personal investment strategy; it often resonates across the wider cryptocurrency market. Hayes is known for his bold macroeconomic predictions and his ability to position his portfolio to capitalize on shifts in global liquidity and monetary policy. His moves are watched as potential indicators for broader sentiment among institutional and high-net-worth investors.

When a figure of his stature openly increases holdings, it can signal confidence in Ethereum’s long-term value proposition and its potential for significant upside. This accumulation strategy, rather than short-term trading, suggests a belief in the fundamental strength and future adoption of the Ethereum network. Such signals can encourage other large investors to reconsider their positions, potentially fueling further buying pressure.

Conversely, the lack of immediate price appreciation despite substantial buys from figures like Hayes also highlights the current market’s consolidation phase. It demonstrates that even significant individual investment doesn’t instantly overcome prevailing technical barriers or broader market hesitancy. Still, the underlying accumulation indicates a robust long-term outlook from key players.

What a successful breakout for Ethereum could mean

If Ethereum successfully breaches its immediate resistance levels, particularly the $1,880 to $1,910 supply zone and the psychological $2,000 mark, it could trigger a significant upward movement. A decisive breakout above $1,920, establishing it as new support, would validate the bullish sentiment that investors like Hayes appear to be betting on.

This kind of technical confirmation often leads to increased trading volume and renewed interest from a wider range of investors, both retail and institutional. The path to $2,000 and beyond would then look clearer, potentially targeting the $2,000-$2,050 range and setting the stage for a challenge of higher long-term resistance levels.

Such a move would underscore Ethereum’s resilience and its continued role as a leading digital asset.

However, the current proximity to these resistance points means market participants should also prepare for potential pullbacks if these levels are not decisively overcome.

The market remains in a delicate balance, where the actions of influential investors provide a strong undercurrent of accumulation, but broader economic factors and technical hurdles still play a significant role in dictating price movements. Hayes’ continued commitment to Ethereum speaks to a conviction that the network’s fundamentals will ultimately prevail.
