Aztec Labs Relaunches zk.money Privacy Wallet

Aztec zk.money, a self-custodial solution for confidential transactions, was relaunched by Aztec Labs on September 29, 2026. money privacy wallet, bringing a self-custodial solution for confidential transactions back to the public on September 29, 2026. The wallet now operates on the Aztec Network, the company’s proprietary privacy-focused Ethereum Layer 2, three years after the original product was discontinued.

Unlike standard wallets, zk.money is designed to shield users’ financial data, including balances, payment amounts, and transaction counterparties, from being publicly visible on the blockchain. The relaunch signifies a major step in a broader movement to bake privacy into the core user experience of decentralized applications, a goal that aligns with Ethereum ecosystem growth and its evolving technical roadmap.

Aztec zk.money returns with new infrastructure

The original zk.money wallet launched in 2021 and found a significant user base, attracting over 75,000 unique wallets and processing more than $100 million in transaction volume before it was shut down in 2023. According to Aztec Labs CEO Joe Andrews, the decision to sunset the popular product was not driven by a lack of demand but by technical constraints of the initial architecture.

“We sunset in 2023, not because private payments were a failed thesis, but because they needed infrastructure that did not yet exist,” Andrews explained. He noted that the first iteration was difficult to scale globally and challenging to update with new features. This limitation prompted a strategic pivot for the company.

For the subsequent three years, Aztec Labs dedicated its resources to building the Aztec Network, a decentralized Layer 2 solution engineered specifically to support private applications on Ethereum. This underlying network, now stewarded by the independent non-profit Aztec Foundation, provides the scalable and extensible foundation that was previously missing.

With the network live, Aztec Labs has returned to its role as a product developer, shipping open-source privacy tools like the new zk.money on top of the protocol it created.

How the reimagined zk.money wallet operates

The new version of zk.money leverages the power of the Aztec Network to offer a fundamentally different user experience from typical Ethereum transactions. By using advanced cryptography, it aims to deliver confidentiality without sacrificing self-custody or the security guarantees of the Ethereum mainnet.

Core privacy and technology

At its heart, the wallet uses zero-knowledge proofs (specifically zk-SNARKs) to validate transactions without revealing any of the underlying details. All private computations are performed on the user’s own device. This process generates a cryptographic proof that confirms the transaction is valid, which is then submitted to the Aztec Network for verification.

This method ensures that sensitive financial data never leaves the user’s control and is not published on a public ledger.

The Aztec Network itself functions as a ZK-rollup, batching many private transactions together and submitting a single proof to the Ethereum blockchain. This approach not only preserves privacy but also dramatically reduces transaction costs and increases throughput compared to executing transactions directly on Layer 1. The entire system is powered by Noir, Aztec’s custom programming language for creating zero-knowledge applications.

User experience and integrations

To simplify the user experience, zk.money replaces long, complex hexadecimal wallet addresses with readable handles powered by the Ethereum Name Service (ENS), such as “yourname.zk.money”. This allows users to send and receive funds using simple, memorable names. The wallet is also designed for ease of use, enabling payments through shareable links.

Users can fund their zk.money wallets directly from Ethereum-based exchanges. Looking ahead, Aztec Labs plans to integrate the wallet with various DeFi protocols on Ethereum, with partnerships expected to be announced in the fourth quarter of 2026. These integrations could drive significant adoption as users seek to shield their activity from the public eye amid steady ETF inflows and increasing on-chain traffic.

Current limitations of the alpha release

The relaunched zk.money is currently in an alpha stage and comes with several limitations. The system is unaudited, and transactions are capped at $2,500.

For asset support, the wallet allows deposits of DAI, USDC, and USDT, but it converts all funds into DAI for private transfers within the network to operate in a more decentralized manner.

The wallet is accessible via a web interface or by running it locally, with a mobile application planned for Q4, although a specific release date has not been set.

Navigating security history and future outlook

The relaunch arrives several months after an exploit targeted older, deprecated Aztec smart contracts in June. Attackers drained about $2.2 million each from two deprecated contracts associated with products that had been shut down years prior. Aztec Labs has since clarified that these incidents were unrelated to the current Aztec Network, and that the new zk.money wallet was not affected.

The project is well-capitalized to pursue its long-term vision, having raised $125 million to date. This includes a landmark $100 million Series B funding round in 2022 led by prominent venture capital firms a16z crypto and Paradigm. This financial backing underscores investor confidence in Aztec’s mission to make privacy a standard feature of the open internet.

In a move to address the complex regulatory landscape surrounding privacy technology, Aztec has also made strategic acquisitions. In May 2026, the company acquired ZKPassport’s identity tools, which had previously been used for sanctions compliance during Aztec’s token sale in late 2025. This suggests a proactive approach to balancing privacy with compliance, even as Ethereum price battles important market resistance.

Ultimately, the return of zk.money represents more than just a product launch; it’s the first major demonstration of the Aztec Network’s capabilities. Its success will be a critical test for the thesis that users want and need practical privacy tools to feel secure transacting on public blockchains.
