Bitcoin Leads Crypto Market Back to $3 Trillion as Traders Return to Risk

Bitcoin is back in the $86,000 neighborhood, and the broader crypto market is moving with it. On Tuesday, total market capitalization briefly crossed $3 trillion as major tokens joined the rally and traders rushed to close bearish positions.

Bitcoin rose about 4.5% over 24 hours, while Dogecoin jumped nearly 11%. XRP gained 5.7%, Solana climbed 3.6%, Ether added 2.3%, and BNB moved 1.6%.

The rebound follows a sharp burst of activity across both spot and derivatives markets. More than $920 million in short positions were liquidated on Monday, while U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs pulled in nearly $1 billion in a single session.

The result is a market that suddenly looks much more energetic than it did only days ago.

Bitcoin Is Pulling the Market Back Into the $3 Trillion Zone

Bitcoin moved above $86,000, reaching a level it had not seen since late January. The move extended Monday’s rally, when BTC gained almost 6% within a few hours.

The effect spread well beyond Bitcoin. Ether was trading near $2,745, while XRP reached about $1.53 and Solana hovered around $117. Dogecoin stood out among major altcoins with its nearly 11% gain.

For the moment, Bitcoin remains the central force behind the move. The altcoin rally is broad, but uneven, with some tokens advancing far more aggressively than others.

That divergence becomes even more visible lower down the market. AKE, a token associated with the Akedo ecosystem, had risen roughly 170% over seven days before falling more than 60% from the all-time high it reached on Sunday.

The $3 trillion threshold itself did not hold for long. At the time of the report, total crypto market capitalization had slipped just below it, despite being up about 4.3% over 24 hours.

Bitcoin ETFs Add Nearly $1 Billion to the Rally

The move is not being driven solely by leveraged traders.

U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $998.95 million in net inflows on Monday, marking their strongest single day since October 2025. That gives the latest rally another layer beyond the price action on exchanges.

ETF flows had already been improving in recent weeks. In early September, U.S. Bitcoin funds attracted about $3.8 billion over three weeks, their strongest streak of 2026 at that point.

Still, the flow picture has been anything but smooth.

Bitcoin ETFs had also experienced sessions when outflows reached several hundred million dollars. On September 15, for example, the funds recorded $450.4 million in net withdrawals.

That makes Monday’s nearly $1 billion inflow notable, but not necessarily a new baseline. Recent history has shown how quickly ETF demand can swing from strong buying to heavy selling.

Bitcoin is also benefiting from a broader shift in risk appetite. Oil prices declined, while U.S. stocks rebounded on Monday, creating a friendlier backdrop for risk assets.

BTC’s move above $86,000 puts it at its highest level in 33 weeks.

Short Sellers Take the Hit as Leverage Builds Again

The most dramatic number in the rebound may be hiding beneath the spot market.

More than $920 million worth of short positions were liquidated on Monday as prices moved higher. Traders positioned for a decline were forced to close their bets as the market moved against them.

Bitcoin had already produced a similar effect earlier in the recovery. When BTC moved back above $81,000, the advance was accompanied by a significant wave of short liquidations.

This time, however, there is another factor to watch: leverage.

Open interest in crypto perpetual contracts is approaching $160 billion, its highest level since late October 2025. The figure represents the value of positions that remain open across these derivatives markets.

It does not mean that $160 billion is sitting on the edge of liquidation. Instead, it signals that traders are once again putting substantial amounts of leveraged capital into perpetual contracts.

That can amplify movements in either direction.

When prices rise quickly, short sellers may be forced to buy back their positions, adding more demand and pushing the market higher. A sharp decline can create the reverse effect for traders betting on further gains.

Bitcoin’s return to roughly $86,000 is therefore more than a price milestone. It arrives alongside renewed ETF demand, a temporary return to the $3 trillion market-cap mark and a much larger appetite for leverage.

For now, all three are moving in the same direction.
