Stablecoins Are Catching Apple and Google’s Attention

Apple and Google are quietly hiring for the parts of finance that used to belong to banks.

New job listings from the two tech giants point to growing interest in stablecoins, tokenized deposits, and blockchain infrastructure, as financial institutions move deeper into digital assets.

Neither company says it is about to launch a stablecoin product. But the roles themselves suggest that blockchain expertise is becoming increasingly relevant to the payment and cloud businesses behind two of the world’s biggest technology companies.

Apple is looking for a New York-based strategist to help shape products across Apple Pay and its broader consumer payments operation. Among the preferred qualifications is an understanding of stablecoins, tokenized deposits, and blockchain technology.

The role sits within Apple’s Wallets, Payments, and Commerce organization and would cover businesses including Apple Card and Apple Cash. According to the listing, the strategist would evaluate potential product structures, commercial models, partnerships, and growth opportunities.

Apple also wants candidates familiar with peer-to-peer payments and credit cards, as well as payment systems outside the US.

The company’s description of the position is less about crypto trading than it is about figuring out where new financial infrastructure could fit inside Apple’s existing ecosystem.

“This role requires a strategic thinker who can blend analytical rigor with a strong business sense, formulate clear and compelling recommendations, and drive projects forward in a fast-paced, collaborative environment,” Apple wrote in the listing.

The mention of blockchain is notable precisely because Apple does not say what it plans to do with it.

The job posting does not indicate that stablecoins or tokenized deposits are coming to Apple Pay, Apple Cash, or Apple Card. For now, the listing only shows that the company considers knowledge of those technologies useful for a senior payments strategy role.

Stablecoins Are Moving Into Big Tech’s Hiring Plans

Google’s approach is more directly tied to the infrastructure behind digital assets.

The company is hiring an Industry Principal Architect for Web3 in Hong Kong, a senior position focused on advising customers across Asia-Pacific and helping shape Google Cloud’s Web3 product direction.

The role is aimed at customers ranging from blockchain foundations and institutional exchanges to digital asset custodians, financial institutions working with tokenized real-world assets, and decentralized application developers.

Google says the architect would identify recurring technical problems across the industry and create reusable reference architectures while influencing its Web3 roadmap.

The job description also names a surprisingly broad list of expertise. Candidates are expected to understand stablecoin payment rails, tokenized deposits, custody systems, blockchain validators, zero-knowledge systems, and smart contracts.

Security and regulatory compliance are part of the remit, too, including regional virtual asset rules overseen by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority and the Securities and Futures Commission.

That puts Google in a somewhat different position from Apple.

Google already provides blockchain infrastructure and has outlined plans for the Google Cloud Universal Ledger, a layer-1 network designed for wholesale payments and asset tokenization. The company was also listed among the supporters of Open USD, a stablecoin project backed by companies including Coinbase, Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, BlackRock, and Shopify.

Stablecoins themselves are blockchain-based tokens generally designed to maintain a stable value against currencies such as the US dollar. Tether’s USDT and Circle’s USDC are two prominent examples.

Their appeal extends well beyond crypto exchanges. Payment companies are increasingly experimenting with the technology for settlement and payouts, making stablecoins relevant to the infrastructure that moves money behind the scenes.

Visa recently said its stablecoin settlement volume had surpassed a $20 billion annualized rate. Mastercard, meanwhile, has expanded support for stablecoin settlement, including USDC and Ripple’s RLUSD.

For Apple and Google, the significance may be less about adding a crypto button to a consumer app and more about understanding how financial infrastructure is changing underneath their existing businesses.

The hiring data does not prove that either company has committed to a specific stablecoin product. It does show that expertise in blockchain-based payments and tokenized assets is becoming useful enough to appear in senior roles at two of technology’s most influential companies.

And when the companies building wallets, cloud infrastructure, and payment systems start recruiting for that expertise, the story is no longer confined to crypto firms.
