Bitcoin Has an Obituary Problem, and Michael Saylor Is Not Buying It

Bitcoin has returned to the $80,000 level, but investor Jason Calacanis would rather write its obituary than celebrate the comeback.

Calling Bitcoin a “dead cat” that keeps bouncing, Calacanis questioned what the asset has become 17 years after its launch. His argument was less about price than relevance: Bitcoin, he suggested, has failed to become especially compelling as a transaction network or smart-contract platform, while its user experience remains intimidating.

Then there is the cultural problem. Calacanis argued that Bitcoin no longer has the same ability to capture the public imagination. The dinner-party version of the conversation, he said, now comes with a familiar punchline: “remember that!”

He also pushed back on one of Bitcoin’s oldest narratives. People now expect the asset to be stable, he argued, while the promise of getting rich quickly has faded. In his telling, Bitcoin has traded rebellious outsider energy for corporate polish, with advocates swapping pirate aesthetics for suits and orange ties.

The sharpest part of his argument was simple: if Bitcoin were going to achieve mass adoption or become especially important for a major use case, it would have happened by now.

Bitcoin Has a Different Pitch According to Saylor

Michael Saylor, who has watched Bitcoin grow since 2011, responded by pointing to the scale of what already exists rather than what has not happened.

“You’ve watched Bitcoin grow since 2011,” Saylor wrote. “It’s now a $1.6 trillion success and the world’s most valuable digital asset.”

His answer to the question of Bitcoin’s purpose was equally direct. “Digital Capital is the killer app,” Saylor continued, framing Bitcoin not primarily as a payments system or smart-contract platform, but as a way to preserve wealth over time.

That ambition, he argued, matters more than whether Bitcoin can still dominate a dinner-party conversation. “Preserving wealth across generations is a bigger ambition than entertaining a dinner party.”

And then came the closing line, almost like a wardrobe decision made with absolute commitment: “The orange tie stays.”

The exchange captures two very different ways of judging Bitcoin. Calacanis is looking at relevance, usability, cultural momentum and mass adoption. Saylor is looking at Bitcoin as a form of digital capital whose significance is measured over generations rather than social attention spans.
