Zcash Eyes November Upgrade to Make Private Payments Three Times Faster

Zcash is lining up an upgrade that could make its private payments feel considerably less patient. Developers are targeting November 5 for NU7, a network update designed to cut block times from 75 seconds to just 25.

The goal is straightforward: get transactions confirmed faster without dramatically changing the amount of new ZEC entering circulation. For anyone using Zcash for direct payments, that could mean less waiting between sending money and seeing it land on the other side.

The November date is still a target, not a locked-in launch. The code is expected to be completed by September 30, with NU7 scheduled to reach Zcash’s test network on October 6. Developers plan to make the final mainnet decision and set an activation height on October 20.

The upgrade was shaped through discussions involving the Zcash Foundation, Project Tachyon, Valar, ZODL and Shielded Labs. Their engineering teams reached agreement on the proposal after community and coinholder polls, with about 2.4 million ZEC cast—around 66% of the eligible pool.

The voting results were strikingly decisive. About 98.9% supported keeping Zcash’s existing halving schedule, while 96.6% backed February 2031 as the point when collected transaction fees would begin flowing back to miners.

Why Zcash Is Changing the Wait

Zcash’s private transactions are built around a simple problem with public blockchains: transparency can reveal more than users intend. Sending funds from a visible address can expose balances, transaction history and connections between addresses.

A shielded Zcash transaction takes a different approach. It hides the sender, recipient and amount from the public blockchain record, allowing payments without leaving the same easily searchable financial trail.

That privacy comes with another consideration: timing.

A blockchain block is essentially a batch of transactions added by miners, and the first confirmation happens when a payment is included in one. By reducing the target interval to 25 seconds, Zcash expects exchanges and bridges that wait for a fixed number of confirmations to process transfers in roughly one-third the time.

At a physical checkout, that still would not match the near-instant rhythm of tapping a card. But for online or direct wallet-to-wallet payments, Zcash’s developers argue that the shorter wait could make private transactions more practical.

There is a catch to producing blocks three times more often: the network cannot simply triple its issuance of ZEC.

Instead, NU7 would divide the reward attached to each block by three while extending the halving interval from 1.68 million blocks to 5.04 million. The result is intended to keep Zcash’s overall issuance broadly similar despite the faster block schedule.

The proposal also introduces the Network Sustainability Mechanism through ZIP-235. Around 60% of transaction fees would be temporarily taken out of circulation instead of being paid directly to miners.

Those coins are intended to return to the mining reward beginning in February 2031, when regular Zcash issuance is expected to be falling through successive halvings. In other words, part of today’s fees would be held back to supplement miner income later.

Zcash is also keeping the user-facing changes relatively contained. NU7 would disable the older transaction format but add no new formats, and wallets are not expected to require major modifications.

The infrastructure behind them may need more attention. Full nodes, indexers and block explorers could require updates before the new rules take effect.

For now, November 5 remains a date on the calendar rather than a guarantee. The next milestones—testnet deployment on October 6 and the mainnet decision on October 20—will determine whether Zcash’s faster, fee-recycling version is ready to move from proposal to live network.
