Bitcoin Golden Cross Flickers as Rate-Hike Bets Put Bulls on Edge

Bitcoin’s latest technical flirtation with a bullish milestone lasted barely long enough to become a story.

The Bitcoin golden cross appeared on Friday after BTC climbed toward $79,837, with its 50-day exponential moving average briefly moving above the 200-day average. Then the chart changed its mind.

Bitcoin was trading around $77,438, still 1.19% higher on the day, after giving back much of its earlier advance. The reversal came as markets digested hotter-than-expected inflation data and rapidly increased bets that the Federal Reserve could raise rates at its next meeting.

The core monthly CPI reading came in at 0.3%, above the 0.2% analysts had expected. Soon after the data landed, CME FedWatch showed the probability of a 25-basis-point hike at roughly 69%. Within hours, that figure had climbed to 86.5%.

That matters well beyond the rates market. Higher borrowing costs can make investors less willing to hold riskier assets, putting pressure on everything from technology stocks to Bitcoin.

The Bitcoin golden cross that blinked

Friday’s price action was dramatic enough to scramble the daily chart.

Bitcoin opened at $76,529, pushed up to $79,837, then fell to $76,040 before recovering toward $77,438. That whipsaw was enough to pull the 50-day EMA back below the 200-day EMA.

The formation is known as a golden cross, one of the most closely followed bullish signals in technical analysis. Bitcoin last produced one on the daily chart in November, and traders often watch the pattern as a sign that a longer-term uptrend may be strengthening.

But the signal is built from historical prices, which means it is inherently backward-looking. And when the two moving averages are sitting almost on top of each other, even a volatile trading session can send the crossover briefly in either direction.

That appears to be what happened here.

The Bitcoin golden cross is not necessarily gone for good. Friday’s daily candle was still open, meaning the relationship between the two averages could change again before the session ends.

More importantly, the rest of the daily chart has not suddenly turned gloomy.

Bitcoin’s Average Directional Index, or ADX, stood at 45. The indicator measures the strength of a trend rather than whether it is moving up or down, with readings above 25 generally indicating a meaningful trend rather than ordinary market noise.

Momentum also remained relatively constructive. Bitcoin’s Relative Strength Index, or RSI, was at 55.5. An RSI above 70 is commonly considered overbought, while below 30 is considered oversold, putting Friday’s reading comfortably in the middle with a modest bullish tilt.

The four-hour chart tells a different story

Zoom in, and the technical picture becomes more interesting.

The four-hour chart never lost its own golden cross. Its 50-period EMA remains above the 200-period EMA, preserving the broader bullish structure that emerged in late August.

Still, the shorter-term indicators are showing signs of fatigue.

Four-hour RSI had fallen to 43.3, moving into bearish territory. Meanwhile, the Squeeze Momentum indicator, which had been compressed for several days, fired as volatility expanded by 3.95%. In this case, that burst of volatility accompanied a move lower.

The four-hour ADX was also only 25.1, barely clearing the threshold associated with a meaningful trend. Compared with the daily reading of 45, that suggests considerably less conviction in the near-term move.

Taken together, the charts present a slightly awkward picture for Bitcoin bulls: the longer-term structure still looks constructive, while the shorter-term setup is losing some energy.

For now, the Bitcoin golden cross is less a definitive signal than a technical tug-of-war unfolding in real time. One sharp move was enough to switch it on and off, while the rates market simultaneously shifted toward a much more hawkish outlook.

That tension is the more revealing part of Friday’s action. The broader trend has not collapsed, but Bitcoin is being forced to navigate a market where technical optimism and changing expectations for interest rates are suddenly pulling in opposite directions.
