Coinbase Wallet Is Back as the Company Chases “Anything, Anywhere” Trading

Coinbase Wallet is getting its old name back—and the timing says plenty about where the company thinks crypto is headed next.

Roughly 14 months after turning Coinbase Wallet into the more ambitious Base App, Coinbase plans to restore the original branding as it leans harder into multichain trading. The idea is less social super-app, more fast-moving gateway to assets scattered across crypto’s increasingly fragmented ecosystem.

Ryan Kass, Coinbase Wallet’s head of product, says the name change reflects that wider mission. “The rebrand back to Coinbase Wallet is a representation that you can access any asset, regardless of what chain it’s on, regardless of the brand of asset on crypto,” he told Decrypt.

The shift puts trading back at the center of the product. Coinbase Wallet now supports assets and activity across networks including Solana, while its menu has expanded to include perpetual futures on Hyperliquid and tokenized stocks across multiple chains.

In other words, the wallet is being positioned as a place where users can chase whatever is interesting right now, rather than being steered toward one particular blockchain ecosystem.

Coinbase Wallet Is Becoming Crypto’s Test Kitchen

The strategy also brings back an older role for the product: a kind of experimental sandbox for assets and features that have not yet made it to Coinbase’s main retail platform.

Kass described Coinbase Wallet as the company’s “test kitchen,” where new ideas can show up quickly. “On Coinbase Wallet, you can usually find things very quickly,” he said. “We offer the Robinhood chain, we offer Hyperliquid perps, and a lot of the time, things that land on Coinbase Wallet will find their way to Coinbase retail.”

That makes the wallet strategically useful beyond its own user base. It can act as an early-stage proving ground for products Coinbase may eventually bring to its flagship exchange.

The rebrand also arrives during a particularly competitive moment. Robinhood Chain has become a hot topic in crypto, while Base remains attractive for its speed and low transaction costs.

Kass does not see that competition as something Coinbase can simply ignore. He argued that users should not have to choose between ecosystems just because the companies behind them compete.

“Right now, Robinhood Chain is very hot, but Base Chain is really fast and offers super cheap fees,” he said. “We believe that this stuff is cyclical, and when the rotation is back to Base Chain, Coinbase Wallet will be ready.”

The broader message is that Coinbase would rather follow user demand than predict which network will dominate the next wave of attention.

That philosophy marks a notable retreat from the social-first ambitions behind Base App. When the product launched in Los Angeles in July 2025, Coinbase pitched it as an “everything app” combining crypto trading with social networking, messaging, AI tools and creator monetization.

Some of those ideas may still survive. But the company is no longer building the product around a specific social model, particularly after Base creator Jesse Pollak stepped back from leading the app in July to focus on the Base blockchain. His earlier push into social features and creator coins had failed to generate the level of adoption he expected.

Now, Coinbase Wallet is heading back toward a simpler proposition—one that sounds almost deliberately unglamorous in an industry obsessed with reinvention.

Trade broadly. Move quickly. Follow the assets.

And let users decide which corner of crypto deserves their attention.
