Bitcoin Miners Are Missing Bitcoin’s Rally as Crypto Stocks Surge

Bitcoin miners are having a strangely quiet moment while the rest of crypto catches fire.

Since August 17, Bitcoin has climbed roughly 22%, lifting crypto exchanges and stablecoin-linked companies alongside it. Mining stocks, however, have largely stayed behind.

The contrast is hard to miss. Crypto-native exchanges such as Coinbase and Bullish have moved broadly in step with Bitcoin, while Robinhood has benefited from the same broader appetite for digital assets alongside its traditional financial products.

Stablecoin businesses have also participated in the move. Circle, the company behind USDC, and Figure, which operates in tokenized home-equity credit, have traded around parity with Bitcoin’s gains.

Then there are the Bitcoin miners.

Among the companies tracked, only Canaan, which manufactures Bitcoin mining equipment, has managed to beat Bitcoin since the start of the rally. The other 10 mining and mining-adjacent companies have lagged, posting a median return of just 1.8%.

For an industry whose fortunes are closely tied to Bitcoin’s price, that gap is becoming one of the more curious stories in the market.

Why Bitcoin miners are missing the rally

Part of the problem is that many miners are no longer betting everything on mining.

During the downturn, several companies began shifting toward high-performance computing infrastructure for AI data centers. The strategy helped give their businesses another source of support when crypto was struggling.

But diversification comes with a trade-off: attention, capital and execution are now divided between two very different businesses.

AI infrastructure can offer miners a second act, but it also introduces new operational risks that can weigh on their stocks. Investors are no longer simply evaluating how much Bitcoin a company can mine. They are also judging whether its data-center ambitions can actually deliver.

That tension is visible in some of the sharpest underperformance.

Core Scientific has trailed Bitcoin by 27% since August 17, while Terawulf has underperformed by 24%. For companies positioned between digital-asset infrastructure and the rapidly expanding AI economy, the market appears to be demanding proof on both fronts.

Bitcoin miners are caught between two trades

There is an ironic upside to the split.

The very businesses that make mining stocks harder to value could also make them more resilient. When Bitcoin rallies, mining can generate strong returns. When crypto prices weaken, AI data-center construction could provide another source of financial support.

That gives these companies exposure to two of the biggest themes running through technology markets right now: Bitcoin and AI.

For the moment, though, the stock market is not rewarding that combination as enthusiastically as it is rewarding exchanges and stablecoin companies. Bitcoin may be pulling crypto higher, but Bitcoin miners are proving that owning the infrastructure behind the asset is a very different trade from owning the asset itself.
