Bitcoin Recovers Toward $79,000 as Zcash ETF Nears $500 Million

Bitcoin is clawing its way back toward $79,000 after slipping below the level Tuesday, as attention shifts from the broader market to an unexpected Zcash surge. The cryptocurrency fell as low as $77,666 before buyers pushed it back toward $78,900 during Asian morning trading on Wednesday, according to CoinDesk data.

That rebound left Bitcoin little changed over 24 hours and nearly 2% higher over the past week. But the more eye-catching move has been happening elsewhere: Zcash has jumped roughly 43% in a week as institutional money continues flowing into Grayscale’s newly launched Zcash ETF.

The fund, which trades under the ticker ZCSH on NYSE Arca, has now crossed $500 million in assets just two weeks after its Aug. 25 debut. Grayscale said the ETF has attracted more than $70 million in cumulative inflows, alongside a $100 million investment from DCG International Investments.

The scale of those holdings is notable in a market where supply can quickly become a talking point. ZCSH now holds more than 550,000 ZEC, equivalent to roughly 3% of Zcash’s 16.9 million circulating supply.

Zcash traded above $1,180 on Tuesday, gaining more than 4% on the day. Trading volume approached $1 billion over 24 hours, while its market value climbed to around $20 billion, making it the crypto market’s tenth-largest asset at one point during the week.

Bitcoin has one eye on markets and another on the Fed

Bitcoin’s hesitation looks less like a crypto-specific story and more like a reaction to the increasingly tense macro environment. Brent crude moved toward $100 a barrel following U.S. strikes on Iranian tankers near Kharg Island, missile retaliation and Houthi attacks targeting Saudi refining infrastructure.

Gold, meanwhile, hovered around $4,407 an ounce, roughly 30% above its level a year ago. Treasury yields remained elevated, with the 10-year note near 4.8% and the two-year yield above 4.3%.

Those rates are becoming particularly important for Bitcoin. Traders are pricing in roughly a 60% probability of a Federal Reserve rate hike at next week’s meeting, according to CME FedWatch.

“The tape is now trading rates rather than anything crypto-specific,” said Jasper De Maere, an OTC trader at Wintermute, in an email. “We expect some more volatility as we move into the back of this week as the final macro data comes in before the FED’s rate decision. $75,000 and $82,000 remain the levels into the 15-16 FOMC.”

The calendar is packed with the kind of data that can suddenly reshape market expectations. Thursday brings the producer price index, followed by consumer price data on Friday, with core CPI expected at 2.4%. Those readings are among the final major inputs ahead of the Fed’s Sept. 15–16 meeting.

Bitfinex analysts are watching a different signal alongside the inflation numbers: whether ETF demand can remain positive while short-term Treasury yields stay high.

“The marker for this week is whether ETF inflows stay positive through the 9 September buyback and the 11 September CPI, even while the two-year holds above 4.34%,” the analysts wrote in an email to CoinDesk. “A market that continues to buy even as the front end of the yield curve remains high will be an indication that it no longer treats the policy rate as the binding constraint.”

Outside Bitcoin and Zcash, the broader market was relatively subdued. BNB rose nearly 2% to about $755, while Tron gained more than 1% to roughly 34 cents and XRP added around 1% to $1.42.

Ether remained close to $2,490 and Solana near $103, both little changed. Dogecoin hovered around 9 cents, while Hyperliquid’s HYPE edged toward $86. Total crypto market capitalization stood near $2.8 trillion.

For Bitcoin, the immediate story is less about a dramatic directional move than a market caught between competing forces. Buyers are defending lower levels, while elevated yields and geopolitical risk are keeping pressure on risk assets.

That makes the next few days unusually important. Bitcoin has recovered much of Tuesday’s decline, but inflation data, ETF flows and the Fed’s next move could determine whether that recovery gathers momentum or stalls again.
