Bitcoin price drama at $78,800 tests blockchain resilience as markets catch a cold

The undisputed heavyweight of digital currency is having a bit of an identity crisis. Rather than holding its high-altitude ground, the latest Bitcoin selloff has pushed the flagship token down to roughly $78,800, stubbornly refusing to clear the $80,000 threshold it has been teasing for a fortnight.

It has been a frustrating two weeks for traders watching the charts. The digital asset is currently sitting about 4.1% below last week’s high of $82,320, shedding nearly half a percent since midnight while struggling to maintain the momentum of its August rally.

But while the heavyweights sweat, the fringes of the internet money world are thriving. Despite the broader Bitcoin selloff, the memecoin sector is surprisingly buoyant, climbing 0.41% as capital rotates out of major caps and into more speculative, culturally driven digital assets.

Other major players are feeling the chill, too. Ether dipped 1% to $2,490, while Solana barely flinched, resting at $103.77. Zcash took the ugliest hit of the morning, sliding nearly 5% to $1,125—though it is still clutching a massive 33% gain for the week, making it the undeniable star of the large-cap roster.

Finding the winners in a Bitcoin selloff

The real heat right now is happening in decentralized finance. Aerodrome Finance’s native token, AERO, absolutely ripped with a 17% daily surge, backed by record-breaking futures interest of 129 million tokens. Buyers aren’t just placing passive bets; they are aggressively hitting the buy button at market value.

Injective (INJ) followed a similar rhythm, jumping 10% and finally breaking past a stubborn $6 ceiling that had trapped it in a supply zone since mid-June. Meanwhile, BNB and Dogecoin are showing serious resilience, shrugging off the broader market pressure to maintain the strongest weekly gains outside of Zcash.

What is driving this selective exhaustion at the top? Macroeconomic headaches—think rising oil prices, elevated bond yields, and persistent rumors of Federal Reserve rate hikes, are keeping traders cautious.

Yet, despite the ongoing Bitcoin selloff and a rise in short positions, short-term options traders on Deribit are still quietly placing optimistic bets that the market will soon bounce back.
