Ripple USD (RLUSD), a U.S. dollar-backed stablecoin issued by Ripple, is carving out a niche in the burgeoning field of AI-driven payments. This push comes primarily through a direct collaboration with global payments giant Mastercard, which is integrating RLUSD and the XRP Ledger (XRPL) into its new payment infrastructure for artificial intelligence agents.

While Google’s protocols are also supported, Mastercard is leading the charge in this specific integration, signaling a strategic effort to build robust payment rails for the emerging agentic economy.

Mastercard drives new AI agent payment infrastructure

Mastercard is spearheading an initiative it calls “Agent Pay for Machines,” directly incorporating RLUSD and the XRP Ledger. This strategic integration represents a significant step toward enabling AI agents to conduct financial transactions seamlessly and securely. The aim is to build a foundational payment layer for autonomous systems.

Chandler Fang, cofounder of t54ai, a company focused on building an agentic economy on the XRP Ledger, predicts this move could unlock hundreds, and eventually millions, of agentic merchants and services. The interoperability with major payment systems positions RLUSD as a key player in the evolving landscape of autonomous transactions.

Verifiable Intent: Securing AI transactions

A core component of this new infrastructure is Mastercard’s Verifiable Intent standard, which the XRP Ledger’s agent payments now support. This standard aligns with Google’s Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) and Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), ensuring broad compatibility across the AI ecosystem.

Verifiable Intent creates a tamper-resistant record of what a user authorized when an AI agent acts on their behalf. This mechanism establishes a shared source of truth, crucial for trust and accountability in transactions executed by artificial intelligence. Such robust verification is essential as AI agents take on more financial responsibilities.

Ripple’s foundational support for AI payments

Ripple itself has been strategically building out its capabilities for AI-driven payments. In June, the company launched the XRPL AI Starter Kit, a new suite of tools and integrations designed to help developers build agentic payment applications on the XRP Ledger.

The Starter Kit’s launch included support for X402-powered payments using both XRP and Ripple USD (RLUSD). This enables AI agents to transact efficiently for various digital services, such as accessing APIs and utilizing computational resources, without direct human oversight.

RLUSD’s stablecoin utility in agentic workflows

The inherent price stability of RLUSD makes it particularly well-suited for agentic workflows that demand predictable value. Use cases include critical functions like invoice settlement, payroll processing, and agent-to-agent commerce, where fluctuating asset prices would introduce undue risk.

Agents needing to denominate value in dollars find clear utility in RLUSD, given its 1:1 peg to the U.S. dollar. Furthermore, the stablecoin addresses workflows where issuer credibility and regulatory considerations are paramount. It’s backed by segregated reserves comprising U.S. dollar deposits, short-term U.S. Treasuries, and other cash equivalents, offering transparency and reliability.

Ripple USD officially launched on December 17, 2024, following approval from the New York Department of Financial Services (NYDFS) on December 10, 2024. This regulatory clarity provides a strong foundation for widespread adoption in automated financial systems. The same transaction primitives that facilitate XRP movements also support RLUSD, and the stablecoin can be exchanged for other assets via the XRPL DEX.

Expanding global reach and ecosystem integrations

The RLUSD stablecoin has also seen significant expansion in its global reach, particularly in the Korean market. It recently secured listings on major South Korean exchanges Upbit and Bithumb, following earlier integrations with Coinone and Korbit. These listings enhance accessibility and liquidity for users and AI agents in the region.

Earlier in July, Nuvion, an AI-powered global banking and cross-border payments platform, announced the integration of RLUSD into its infrastructure. Nuvion, which builds on fiat and stablecoins for businesses and fintechs, recognizes RLUSD’s potential to streamline international transactions and financial services within the AI-driven economy. This step further solidifies stablecoins
