Peter Schiff warns SpaceX stock slump signals

Veteran economist Peter Schiff has escalated his warnings about potential market instability, asserting that the recent financial downturn of Elon Musk’s SpaceX — characterized by a significant stock decline and rising bond yields — serves as a critical **SpaceX warning for crypto** and the broader tech stock sector. Schiff, known for his market skepticism, used X (formerly Twitter) to highlight these developments, suggesting they indicate an overheated market facing correction.

SpaceX’s stock (SPCX) closed near $115 on Wednesday, July 22, almost 20% below its June IPO price and nearly 50% down from its peak.

The aerospace firm’s long-term 2056 bonds have also seen their yields rise to a record high of 7.6%, reflecting increased risk perception among bondholders. This dual decline in both equity and debt markets fuels Schiff’s argument that an “AI stock bubble” may have already burst.

He suggests this could have potential ripple effects for other “overhyped” assets, including digital currencies, seeing it as a tangible shift in market sentiment.

SpaceX financial health under scrutiny

SpaceX’s financial health has indeed drawn considerable scrutiny following its first-quarter net loss of $4.28 billion against $4.69 billion in revenue. This substantial loss has notably ratcheted up risk perception among bondholders, leading to higher yield demands for the company’s debt. It represents more than just stock volatility, indicating a fundamental reassessment of the company’s financial obligations.

The company issued $25 billion in debt across five groups in June, with initial interest rates ranging from 5.35% to 6.65%. Credit spreads on its 2056 notes have widened from roughly 1.75% at issuance to over 2.3% today, underscoring growing apprehension. These bond market dynamics often serve as an early indicator of broader market sentiment shifts.

Bond investors are typically more conservative and sensitive to credit risk than equity investors, meaning their pricing decisions reflect a deeper concern about a company’s ability to service its obligations. When a high-profile entity like SpaceX faces such stress in its debt markets, it can suggest systemic re-evaluations of risk across interconnected asset classes. This is a point crypto investors should consider carefully.

Peter Schiff’s persistent market warnings

Peter Schiff, a veteran economist and outspoken market skeptic, has linked SpaceX’s recent troubles to a wider market phenomenon. He contends the company’s decline serves as a “harbinger of things to come for other overhyped stocks and cryptos,” a view he shared on X on July 22. This aligns with his previous statements that the “AI stock bubble” has “likely already popped.”

Schiff’s critics often point to his long history of bearish calls that haven’t always materialized. However, the specific financial events unfolding with SpaceX, particularly in the debt markets, lend his recent warnings more weight. They suggest a concrete shift in market dynamics rather than just a generalized concern about overvaluation.

His analysis emphasizes how the current tech-driven market, often influenced by AI narratives, might be particularly vulnerable to repricing. The perception of an AI stock bubble gains credence when prominent companies like SpaceX exhibit significant financial strain. For crypto, which frequently mirrors speculative tech stock movements, this correlation becomes critical to watch.

Looming share unlock and market implications

Another layer of complexity for SpaceX involves a major stock unlock expected in early August, two days after its second-quarter earnings report. This event could significantly increase the tradable float of SPCX shares. The freely tradable shares at IPO were fewer than 5%.

The tradable float could expand eightfold by year-end, or roughly 900% by early September, according to estimates. This massive potential supply increase creates significant downward pressure on the stock. Market supply-demand dynamics could be severely disrupted, irrespective of underlying company performance.

For markets sensitive to liquidity and sentiment, like cryptocurrency, the consequences of such a lockup expiry in a major tech firm are noteworthy. A substantial sell-off post-unlock could amplify negative sentiment, potentially triggering risk-off behavior across correlated assets. Traders are likely to monitor these events closely as a barometer for broader market fragility.

Contagion concerns for digital assets

The financial distress at SpaceX, particularly visible in its bond market, offers a critical perspective on potential vulnerabilities within the broader digital asset ecosystem. The crypto market frequently correlates with speculative tech stocks, especially during economic uncertainty or shifts in risk appetite. When institutional investors perceive heightened risk in one sector, they often reduce exposure across other risk-on assets.

Traders will likely watch SPCX bond yields as an early signal for potential repricing across other asset classes. A continued increase in these yields signifies a deepening lack of confidence in credit quality, a sentiment that could easily spill over into less tangible assets like cryptocurrencies. The narrative of “overhyped” assets, whether in AI or digital tokens, finds common ground in such environments.

While Peter Schiff has long been a vocal critic of Bitcoin and crypto, the specific financial pressures now evident in SpaceX’s debt and equity markets provide a new dimension to his warnings. It’s not just a broad bearish outlook; it’s a detailed observation of how a leading, high-growth company is struggling to maintain its valuation and creditworthiness. This makes his current caution, especially regarding market contagion, a relevant data point for crypto investors to consider.
